Kyle Orton could be on the Vikings' radar

Some believe that Christian Ponder is the most immediate NFL-ready quarterback in the 2011 rookie class. But whether this is true or not, with no offseason workouts, even the most NFL-ready rookie is unlikely to actually be ready come Week 1.
K. Orton (US Presswire)
Thus, it’s no surprise that ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Kyle Orton could be on the Vikings’ radar. Orton figures to be on the trading block in Denver. Mortensen says the Vikings have no interest in experimenting with Joe Webb in this role. Webb, in fact, may find himself back at wide receiver. (My analysis, not Mort’s.)

Being a veteran bridge quarterback for the Vikings would be in step with the rest of Orton’s career. Orton started ahead of rookie first-rounder Rex Grossman in Chicago and ahead of another first-round Gators quarterback in Denver named Golden Child Tim Tebow.

It’s worth noting that of the veteran quarterbacks available in 2011, Matt Hasselbeck and Donovan McNabb might be better fits in Minnesota than Orton. Both have spent the majority of their decade-plus careers operating in a West Coast offense similar to the one Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave will run.

Then again, Hasselbeck is somewhat injury prone and McNabb must shake his new reputation (fair or unfair) of not being able to adjust to new surroundings. Orton, on the other hand, is schematically versatile, accurate, fundamentally sound and, in all likelihood, affordable.

Hey BrewHAHA. Just be thankfull you have had 2 great back to back QB's. Both at this point look like HOF. Do you remember the records of the teams in the 70's and 80's  in GB? One thing we can agree on is our team needs a QB that gives our team a chance to compete... Orton would be a great pick-up to give time to Ponder. Is he the aswer? Time will tell. Did you know Rogers was your guy? Most likely after he had 3 years to be tutored by Favre. You GB packer fans won't admit how important Favre's influence was to the developement of Rogers. BE THANKFUL!! Because you, more than any team know how a team suffers without a Quality QB leader.  Be thankful and count your blessings.   Orton may be a good choice at this point. Let's only hope that Ponder can be the QB that steps up to lead and make a difference.

Why not just play who they have. If it is for only one year, what does Orton bring to the table that one of the qb's on the roster doesn't? Seems that if they play who they have, at least they play with someone who knows the system and the playbook.

BrewHaHa, I agree that Orton is getting slammed far more than he should by analysts. He was adequate for a QB in last year's disaster of a season. Like you mentioned, Orton did an admirable job considering the state of the Broncos defense and running game.  I think he would be a great fit for the Vikings and would give them an immediate 180 from where they were headed by the end of last year.  Peterson, despite his moronic slavery comments, is still one hell of a running back. With him being a true threat to score every time he touches the ball Orton will face a fractionn of the blitzes and coverages designed against him last year since the opposing defense will not have the luxury of playing the pass every down.  I am one of the Tebow faithfuls who hope to see #15 starting whenever games resume, but I do not underestimate the value of a QB like Kyle Orton, especially if he is playing for a team that has all of the other pieces in place.

What's the Beef with Orton?

I guess I just don't understand why Orton has to take all these jabs. Seems to me he did a pretty good job last season with little to no running game and a suspect receiving corps. I mean, the guy threw for 3600 yards and 20 tds (9 int)!? Considering how bad the DEF was last season, its surprising he didn't throw more ints. He won me a few fantasy games last year for sure!
Do the Bronco's really view him as a liability? Is his paycheck to much to bear? Is he a locker room problem? No, no, no... well then whats the beef? I'm asking you Bronco fans to please expand on the issue. Is this McDaniels' fault? Wow, what a fu<k show that was...
If I'm a Vikings fan, I'm praying Orton starts under center in purple and yellow. He could possibly be the missing link. McNabb would be a disaster, and Hasselbeck won't leave Seattle to play in the NFL. I don't see either of those guys in MN next year.
As a Packer fan, I just love to sit back and watch the circus that is the Minnesota Vikings.
GO PACKERS!!!

Kyle Orton could be on the Vikings' radar

Im a GB fan so any NFC north team getting better is bad...but this would be a solid move by the Vikes. They don't need a homerun hitter to get their team to the POs and Orton has shown he can put up better-than-game-manager numbers. Orton seems to be a fairly down-to-earth guy who takes what hes given and does his best with what he has. He doesn't seem like the guy who would put up a huge stink if they try to work in Ponder at some point, and I'm sure hed enjoy being trusted with a team that, while out of the SB run (i think), could definitely make the POs with good QB play. He's not going to have Brett Favres 2009 year and he won't be there for the next 8 seasons, but that's not waht the Vikes need right now with Ponder the obvious Future QB (if he's any good)

Kyle Orton could be on the Vikings' radar

No matter who the Vikings put at QB this season, they are not going to get a sniff of the playoffs. Too may better teams above them. The Lions are going to be moving up, possibly at the expense of the Vikings place in the standings.

Who knows what the Bears will look like this season? They are a mystery. They could go 10-6 or 6-10.
