The NFL lockout hasn't been fun but at least it had not caused the cancellation of anything on the league's calendar -- until now. The NFL has cancelled it's rookie symposium in Canton, Ohio, a league source told

The symposium, which was originally scheduled to begin June 26, will likely be "officially" cancelled on Tuesday. Mike Freeman of reported several months that the symposium was in danger as a result of the lockout.

The symposium is designed to bring all the NFL rookies together to try and teach them about life in the NFL, how to better manage their finances, and give tips on general transition to life as a professional athlete.

Our source says NFLPA officials and current active players spoke to rookies at the NFL PLAYERS’ Rookie Premiere about business aspects of the game. We're told that a portion of the meeting touched on some of the issues normally discussed at the Rookie Symposium.
NFL Labor

The timing of the decision in pretty indicative of where we stand on the lockout. The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals is scheduled to hear arguments from both the NFL and the players regarding the injunction of the lockout on June 3. It is not believed the Court of Appeals will rule on that hearing until at least July.

The cancellation of the symposium makes it pretty clear that the expected timing of the court's decision is accurate.

It also means expecting any sort of settlement and/or conclusion of the labor situation before July might just be a fool's errand.

NFL cancels Rookie Symposium amid lockout

; College educated young men with God-given athletic skills need a symposium from the NFL for a TRANSITION to the next level of their careers? Maybe for monetary & investment purposes--yes. Do college educated young men that go on to careers in medicine, law, science, education etc. need symposiums to conduct themselves in those careers. Or do they instinctually & morally know that it's Grown-Up time & time to do the right thing, moving foward & separating the thug from the Man.

Just another Owner mistake. This is extremely hypocrtical, which was said earlier. Owners want their cake, martinis, and pie in one swoop of the gavel. No discipline fines for any players if they can't be advised what to do and not do. Owners, without top talent, nobody will come to the games. Blackouts in major markets will hit where it hurts most, because fans don't want to hear it or see it. Enough already.

NFL cancels Rookie Symposium amid lockout

What the NFL and Roger Goddell have proven with this is that they rae the biggest bunch of hypocrits there are walking this earth. In one voice Goddell claims that there is a standard of conduct that he wants each and every player to follow, but in the next he doesn't want to teach the rookies what that is.

I guess Goodell wants each individual team to police their new charges....wait, they can't, they are not allowed to have contact with them. Another great job by the new czar of the NFL. Can't wait to see what happens when a rookie breaks the law, gets arrested and has to have him meeting with Goodell. This should be entertaining.

Ray Lewis said that their would be more crime because of the lockout. I think he may be right with rookies, fat with cash from their agents (not under contract with a team yet) running amok on the streets with nothing to do.

In an era where NFL players are getting arrested almost every single day, canceling the one small thing that might teach rookies the errs of their peers has been cancelled.  So lock your doors if you live in a pro football town, the rookies are coming....
