Goodell still says fans want 18 games

GoodellPosted by Josh Katzowitz

As an outside observer, it seems that hardly anybody wants the NFL to move to an 18-game schedule. With the exception of 33 people – the 32 owners, plus commissioner Roger Goodell – it comes across to me that people are cool with the 16 games.

Yet Goodell, according to the (Nashville) Tennessean, continues to use the line that fans just can’t stop shivering in anticipation of two extra games.

“We do think it is attractive to season-ticket holders. I hear that all of the time from our season-ticket holders,” Goodell said on a conference call with Titans season ticket holders. "We have not abandoned our position on that. We do think it is the right thing for the game. It improves the quality of what we do, and it improves the value for you as season-ticket holders. … We do think it is a benefit for everybody, but we want to do it the right way, and we want to do it responsibly. That includes the players’ perspective.”

Hardly anybody likes the preseason schedule and yeah, I can see why Goodell thinks it’s in the fans' best interests to give them more real games for the money they’re spending on season ticket packages.

But I just don’t get the sense the fans are all that keen on the idea (and we KNOW that the players don’t want it), mostly due to injury concerns.

Yet, Goodell just won’t stop, and it's getting laughable.

But here’s the thing, and Yahoo! Sports’ Doug Farrar points it out: Goodell has participated in 19 conference calls like this, and after reading transcripts of the talks, hardly any fan has mentioned wanting what Goodell says the fans want.

And here’s what I don’t understand. The 18-game schedule is off the table for these labor negotiations, so why is Goodell STILL talking about it? Especially when it seems somewhat clear that the fans aren’t all that interested in the idea.

Labor News
I took an unscientific Twitter poll this morning to gauge the fans’ reaction to the idea of adding two more games, and here are my results: 83.9 percent of the respondents said they like the 16-game format fine, thanks very much (psst, I guess they must not be season ticket holders, right?).

Here are a few of their responses:

From @L7Panda: “NO to an 18 game season, just like the previous polls had said, 80% of fans do NOT want an 18 game season. NO NO NO NO NO.”

From @CJ_Camisa: "Yes!!!! As a Packer fan I want even more of my players to miss time to injuries!!! They don't take enough hits!" #sissies

From @Preine_PtR: "As a Browns fan, I'm usually begging for the season to be over with by week 5."

From @manicsocratic: "18 game schedule is fine. Make it fair to the players and change regulation to 48 minutes though."

So, that seems pretty clear to me. Fans don’t want it, and season ticket-holders don’t want it. I just wish Goodell would stop pronouncing it like it’s some kind of fact.

By the way, you can check out the labor timeline and the labor issues of the day. You know, in case you need a refresher.

Goodell still says fans want 18 games

16 game season is enough.  I don't personally know one NFL fan who wants to see  it go to 18 games.  Why can't the owners and the commissioner just say they want to make a lot more money with an 18 game season.  Protect the integrity of the game and the quality of play and the money will follow.

Goodell still says fans want 18 games

I really thought he was going to be a good commisioner.  HE is just a laughable idiot.  I have not heard of one football fan wanting 18 games.  Where does he come up with these statements.

Goodell still says fans want 18 games

No need for 18 games - 16 is fine - the only issue is the changing of the damn rules.  They get paid millioins to play a game some of us wish we could still be playing for less --- can't hit them here or there -- can't hit them anywhere(a little Dr Suess for you) -- complete panies the rule makers.  If the players don't want to play - they don't have too - if the owner/players can't agree on how to split billions - they don't deserve us the fans attention -- wish I had such problems - maybe I wouldn't stress so much on if my daughter will have finances to pay for her education so much.  Come on Goodell -- put your damn foot down - 16 games and get this crap straighted out --- I have fantasy draft to prepare for - lol.

Why can't it be 17? With 3 pre-season games.

Why is it 16 or 18?  Is there a reason it can't be an odd number of games?  3 preseason games would be perfect and it's enough time to scout young players.  Just a thought.

Goodell still says fans want 18 games...

Hey A**HOLE(i.e. R.GOODELL.) I'll speak for myself. SIXTEEN GAMES please. Stop trying to water down/WAL-MARTize the NFL. Trojan1882 is 100% behind the cause of the players, regardless of the odd ignorant comment made by the odd player. The players are an extension of the US workforce. The longer this drags on, the more I despise what the NFL owners are trying to accomplish here. Exactly what US INC. is attempting to accomplish across the entire country: The systematic "red-stating" of the NFLPA/US middle class.  Whats "red-stating" you ask? Just ask an unemployed Southerner whose baby drinks Mountain Dew for nourishment his thoughts on Gay marriage/medicare/military/Quran burning. You'll get your answer.

Goodell still says fans want 18 games

NO ONE PAYS FOR 4 PRESEASON GAMES!  There are two home games.  You want that cut to 1?  HUGE difference.  You want to miss a season fighting about paying for one game?  If you can't afford tickets then don't buy them.  Season ticket holders, owners, and players keep whining about what they want to fix a game that was not broken.  Well now it's broken and there may not be a season.  Keep up the good me, me, me whining.

I don't know why the players are worried about playing a few extra games.  Now, some teams play 16 and others play 17, 18, and 19 with the play-offs.  If they are so afraid of injury because they are making so much money, does that mean some players are thankful for not making the play-offs so their career lasts longer?

Goodell still says fans want 18 games

Nah, fans just want the NFL and players to agree and keep things relatively the same. Crazy changes left or right is insane. You had a working product already! There is plenty of money, I don't understand how all these folks with this much money can't just be reasonable in expectations first. Better yet, why isn't the NFL looking to help where it can and the players give where they can?
