Over the weekend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Leonard Pope, who played collegiately at the University of Georgia, was in his hometown of Americus, Georgia, relaxing at a pool party. By the time he left, he had saved a six-year-old named Bryson from drowning.

Details via the Americus Times-Recorder:

"We were attending a pool party, and Bryson was in the water with the other kids,” said (mother) Ann Moore, who has known Pope since he was a little boy. “All of a sudden, I saw Bryson going down in the water and I started screaming. Leonard was inside, and he came out of nowhere and dove into the water without any hesitation, cell phone in his pocket and all. He saved my son’s life, and I am so thankful that he was there for me and my child. ...

“My prayers were answered by God when Leonard jumped in and saved my son,” said Moore. “The fact that he is normally at camp and could have been in Kansas City just proved to me that he was placed here to save my son from drowning, and I thank God that he was here. He truly lived up to his nickname “Champ” because he was truly a champion for me and my son this past weekend.”

Moore said that Pope was the only person at the party who knew how to swim, and if he hadn't been there she thinks there was a good chance her son could have drowned.

Thankfully, everybody's safe, although in the future it might be prudent to hold summer get-togethers well clear of pools, ponds, lakes -- anywhere there might be water.

As for Pope, like everybody else in the NFL, he's currently out of work. Hopefully, that will change in the coming weeks, but for now all he can do is take part in informal workouts and keep in shape for an eventual 2011 season.

In the meantime, we look forward to the NFL issuing a press release touting that the lockout is now saving lives.

"We were attending a pool party..... Pope was the only person at the party who knew how to swim"

Does this strike anyone else as a little... odd?

The funny part is when mom says "Leonard jumped in, cell phone and all".... haha like getting your cell phone wet should matter over saving a childs life? Not to mention he can buy 2 million cell phones if he wants.

Everyone's Invited to my Hunting Party

Hey everyone, I have never fired a gun before or wandered in the woods, and neither have any of my friends or their children.  But... we are still going to have the best hunting party ever!  Just remember to wear loud colors and grab your grand-pappy's shotgun.  We are going to have a blast!!

Finally a positive story about an NFL player.  Good job.  On the other hand, how does someone have a pool party where only one person knows how to swim and why on earth do you let you kids in a pool if they do not know how to swim??

Chiefs TE Leonard Pope saves boy from drowning

As someone mentioned earlier, this is a much better ending than the last Chiefs and drowning story.  Way to go, Leonard.  As everyone mentioned earlier, who the hell has a pool party with one person who knows how to swim in attendance?  The acknowldegement of many African-American's lack of ability to swim(not being racist, look it up if you don't believe me)does not come into play here because you don't let your kids in the water without a sufficient amount of adults who can swim there.  The issue is not that most of the party goers could not swim, it is that they let kids swim.  Finally, I guess to each his own, but if my kid is in a life or death situation I go for the save no matter what I can or can't do.  I don't know how to fight wolves but if I saw some eating my kid I would damn sure learn on the fly.
