Report: John Harbaugh didn't want Jimmy Smith?

It wasn't a surprise when the Ravens eventually selected troubled cornerback Jimmy Smith in the April draft. Baltimore needed secondary help, and conventional wisdom suggested that the Ravens locker room, led by Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, would keep Smith in line.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome has an impressive track record of drafting winners, dating back to 1996, when he took Jonathan Ogden and Lewis. So you're willing to give Newsome the benefit of the doubt on Smith, even if you couldn't see the former Colorado cornerback through all the raised red flags.

Turns out, according to a report from Baltimore Sports Report, Ravens coach John Harbaugh didn't want Smith.

In a recent radio appearance with Ken Weinman and Vinny Cerrato (yep, same guy) on 105.7 The Fan, Philly radio personality Howard Eskin says he believes that all the confusion surrounding the Ravens' 26th pick (which ultimately turned into the 27th pick) was because Harbaugh was uncomfortable taking Smith.

“You know those background checks they do,” Eskin asked. ”Man, it didn’t come up pretty (on Smith). …

“Smith had problems — he was struggling with the character issues, he really was,” Eskin said. “And once the Eagles got past their place in the draft, I think there was communication between John (Harbaugh) and the Eagles people to try to find out a little about this guy because they know that the Eagles did look at him and I think he had some real reservations with that.”

This is all speculation at this point. Eskin admits that he hasn't talked to Harbaugh, although he presumably heard something somewhere. Plus, it's not unreasonable to think that Harbaugh -- or anyone in the Ravens organization -- had reservations about Smith. Leading up to the draft, many experts said that Smith had top-10 talent but the dreaded "character concerns" dropped him off many teams' draft board. Twenty-six teams passed on him, after all.

As PFT's Mike Florio points out, it's only a matter of time before the Ravens issue a statement denying Eskin's report because they're already invested in Smith. Unless Harbaugh can get his hands on a time machine, Smith is now his problem. Might as well make the best of it.

UPDATE: Peter King, via Twitter, refutes Eskin's comments: "That story about John Harbaugh not wanting Jimmy Smith? Wrong. Totally wrong."

Report: John Harbaugh didn't want Jimmy Smith?

This is a classic case of nohting to report. I'm not a fan of either team, but the speculation is getting out of hand. Where was this artcile draft day? In my opinion, you've got a bunch of NFL analists looking to justify thier salaries during a lockout. Expect these types of articles to get worse the longer it drags on.
You could'nt find a GM in the league not willing to take a chance on a character guy if he could get the job done. Look at NE with Randy Moss!(Best drafting/free agent team NFL).They deserve what they got. An established asshol! An all about me player. Sorry NE fans but it's true. If you can catch, throw, or or run at a high level in the league, then you have a spot. Name a top 10 player at thier position who can't find a team. Thats how it should be btw! It's a job!
Nobody can tell me they don't have that guy in thier offfice. Think of your workplace under such speculation. It's the fans who put the pressure on teams to pick good character guys.

Tim Tebow is the top selling jersey in the NFL! Whats has he done other than being a stand up guy?  Big Ben? Athelets are people with flaws too. If you humiliate your company you could get fired, but not if your him. Or Mike Vick for that matter. I would bet Plaxico gets signed quite quicklyonce out of jail.
Give me a break with the silly indignation!

I hope Jimmy Smith is not another Aqib Talib or Pacman Jones.  He is what every NFL defense is looking for; a tall, cover corner who can play outside vs the other teams best receiver.  I hear he also plays the run well.

"This is all speculation at this point. Eskin admits that he hasn't talked to Harbaugh, although he presumably heard something somewhere."

Presumably?  Why presumably?  And if so does that produce credibility?  I think the field goal in a 1960's Colts-Packers game that disappeared in the fog and was called bad was actually good and Baltimore should have won the game.  Why?  I "heard something somewhere."  Did what I hear have any credibility at all?  The football was LOST IN THE FOG, so of course not.

Finally, Newsome, Harbaugh and company are VERY professional and certainly had their ducks in a row about Smith BEFORE the draft even started.  Note that the "confusion" was the other team failing to notify the league about the draft, NOT from the Ravens.

C'mon guys. I'm as desperate as the next football junkie for news, but this story even says it isn't based on fact and that another authority calls "bullsh*t" on it. Let's try to minimize the fictionalized drama. This is sports not the bloody View. The one thing we don't need on these pages, especailly in the wake of Favre fever, is more gossip.

Ray and Ed are not a role models for any player.

I get tired of hearing about Ray or Ed setting player straight.
It is not their job to set players straight, leave that to the coaches. Let them do what they do best play football.

This whole belief that Ray Lewis, and Ed Reed are gonna babysit these players is a fallacy imo.  Lewis, and Reed are not gonna follow this kid around Baltimore and make sure he stays out of trouble.

I think the assessment that the team veteran leaders, specifically Lewis and Reed, will definitely keep this kid in line.  He'll be humbled right off the bat when he finds himself carrying both of their gear off the field after practice. (If there IS any practice, that is.....)
