Steve Smith's travails with the Panthers this offseason have been well documented, despite the calm nature of the relationship.

But it does appear that the Panthers will eventually deal the veteran receiver, which means the only question is what they'll be able to get in return for the 32-year-old wideout.

Joe Pearson of the Charlotte Observer penned a piece over the weekend indicating five things the Panthers need to do when football gets rolling again, and "Deal with Steve Smith" checks in at No. 2.

Pearson correctly believes Carolina will simply trade the "disgruntled receiver" and thinks that "a third-round pick might be enough to pull the trigger."

We're inclined to agree, for a couple of reasons. One, Smith is pretty clearly not going to hang around in Carolina -- if he does, it's because a) no one wants him or b) the Panthers want to much in return.
Smith's Saga in Charlotte

"A" isn't going to happen and "B" seems unlikely, because Carolina's a team on the rebuild who's dealt with missing critical draft picks over the past few years. As such, they value the possession of extra selections on draft day, especially in a time of need.

And for a team like the Chargers -- the top-rumored landing spot for Smith thus far -- a third-rounder seems like a pretty fair price to pay for a guy who'll be under contract for two years, owed $15 million and still has plenty of big plays left in the tank.

Unless Steve is related to AJ, which I don't believe he is.  AJ usually doesn't give up anything for people with locker room drama and character issues.

Panthers might take 3rd-rounder for Smith

@GoBlues! - his numbers have been declining over the previous seasons because he hasn't had a quarterback to throw to him and the Panthers haven't had a real receiving threat opposite Smith since Moose left the first time. Not since Delhomme was good have the Panthers been able to throw the ball with any kind of consistency and, to top it off, since they haven't had a QB, they've been forced to run the ball. Defenses have simply stacked the box and cheat the safety over to Smith's side, taking him out of the game. Poor stats do not appear to be a reflection of this guy's talent. If he lands with a complete team, he should have a resurgence - not necessarily a Moss to Patriots style resurgence, but maybe a T.O. to Cincy 2010 season.

Smith for a 3rd?  The Bears should do that deal yesterday.

Don't they mean...."The Panthers would gladly GIVE a 3rd rounder to get rid of the loud mouth malcontent?"  Who wants this diva?  You want him to punch a teammate in the face and break his nose again?  Talk about the QB again?  No thanks.

I think a fourth or fifth is more likely. A third seems high when they could probably hold out and eventually Carolina would just cut him and then they could get him for nothing. The only reason you give up a pick is to get him before he is on the open market. His salary would go down on the open market too but again I think there's too much interest from multiple teams for him to get cut.

Panthers might take 3rd-rounder for Smith

He was an elite receiver 3 years ago.  His last three years produced, 1421, 982, and 554 yards.  At that rate, he should check in with about 100-200 yards this season.  He is the definition of a has-been, and a cancerous one at that.  Why would any GM in his right mind give up a 3rd rounder for Steve Smith?  As soon as he arrives in camp, he's likely to make his presence felt by busting a fellow teammate in the mouth.  Not such a bold prediction, considering he is guilty of that TWICE.  I hope this guy just gets released and fades away without any fanfare.
