Cam Newton has a tough task ahead of him once the lockout's resolved -- he has to learn the entirety of Rob Chudzinski's insanely complex offense, and do so in a short amount of time.

But he's been working with some former NFL quarterbacks, including Chris Weinke, and it appears to be paying huge dividends for the rookie out of Auburn.

According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, these sessions have featured detailed learning of the Panthers' playbook, "about 90 percent of which Weinke has installed."

Essentially, Newton's mimicking the practices he'd be getting in the lost offseason by getting a play from Weinke, calling out the play like he was in the huddle, going through each play's cadence at the line of scrimmage, and then slinging passes to whatever receivers are there.

Entertaining/Iconing

Per Person, some recent attendees include Michael Clayton, Alex Smith, Titus Young and a "couple small-college receivers."

Following the throws, Weinke and former Chudzinski protégé Ken Dorsey -- who we'd also mentioned as a Newton tutor -- make suggestions as to how Newton can improve his mechanics and individual tweaks and designs for each play that's being run.

"He wants to be great," Weinke said.

Newton probably does want to be great -- the issue will be whether or not he's capable of recreating the success he had at Auburn once he gets on the field for the Panthers.

But given how unsettled the NFL's situation is right now, it's pretty darn impressive to see Newton maximizing his offseason, especially when there's no enforced motivation to do so.

Newton knows 90 percent of Panthers' playbook?

And had a sub .500 record during his entire tenure with the Bucs.  Not to mention a sub .500 record during his time with Redskins, even with his 3 playoff wins in '87.  14-29 for 207 1 TD and 1 pick in the Divisional round, 9-26 for 119 yds 2 TDs and 0 INTs in the Conference Championship.  Ever think that the Redskins won in SPITE of Williams?  Best passer rating in any game besides the Super Bowl, in the playoffs, 75.6, with his worst game being 7.5, in said NFC title game for the Bucs.  NEXT!!!!

I just looked at all the Super Bowls. In the history of the NFL, there has never been a team that won a championship "in spite of" their QB. Ever! Not Dilfer, Rypien, Williams, Hos. A guy has a playoff run of 41 of 84 for 666 yds (as I typed the yards, I thought you might be the devil. Eery!) and 7 tds to 2 ints. I will take that all day long in 1987 football. Who doesn't have a losing record with Bucs at QB? Steve "Freakin" Young, HOF, has a losing record with the Bucs. Only playoff win in Bucs first 20 years. Not Deberg, Testaverde, Young or Erickson. All have losing records, by the way. Is this George Will?

And what does that have to do with the current president?  I don't find him to be cocky or arrogant and I never would have voted for him because I seriously dislike his politics.  But I guess you do?
The President acts like a cocky, arrogant asshole? <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #000000; font-style: normal;">- Notorius 98/ CBSSports.com/ July 3, 2011 7:56 am
Seriously. You are hilarious. Just reckless conversation. I warned you about that. Is this Michelle Bachmann?
I'm more of a Centrist. I wish that party was available in America. You right wing nut. Please bring a stronger candidate for 2012. Christy stand up. He's scared. And he should be scared. President Obama is a powerful politician. I would love a great race to discuss America's issues on a bipartisan platform. You slanted, vertigo-inflicted virus. Is this Glen Beck?

First, Michael Vick has always been overrated.  He's flashy, exciting to watch, and can throw the football a mile, but he's never been overly accurate.  This past year he was in a good situation, playing for speedy receivers with high YAC numbers, including league leader LeSean McCoy.  I'll wait to be impressed until I see him do it again.  Second, there have a slew of more talented QBs to come into the league since Vick, including Rodgers and (shudder) Rivers.  If you would have used the word "athletic", I would have agree with you, but you didn't.
If you "can throw the football a mile", have the strongest arm in the league and are the fastest QB in the league, your're the most talented player at that position. I didn't say most polished. 46-31-1 as a starter, however. Rodgers dropped to the bottom of the first round for a reason. Yes he is talented; however, no one could have predicted his success. Not nearly the talent of Vick. If so, beat out Alex Smith for No. 1 overall. Rivers had(s) a herky, jerky motion coming out of college. I really liked him coming out. Not a No. 1 overall talent. If so, beat out Eli Manning for that position. I didn't say athletic for a reason. Is this Jimmy "The Greek" ?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HAHAHAHAHAHA.  Yeah, he got in trouble at Florida because Tebow sucked and not because he's an arrogant jackass.  Oh wait, he's gotten into trouble at Auburn too because the NCAA is STILL investigating recruitment violations.  How long before we find out that Newton needs to return the Heisman trophy?  I smell a pattern.  Let's also throw in the fact that Tebow wasn't a one year wonder in  college like Newton.  He won a Heisman one year and the National Championship the next, while finishing third in Heisman voting, and fifth the season after.  And you know exactly what I'm talking about.  Tebow = more accompished college QB, bigger resume, same criticism coming out of school about his game, only you call him a bum because he's white and Newton a stud because he's black.  I've already figured you out.  You're blinded by race.
Yep.  Everybody, including myself, was railing against Tim Tebow, a more accomplished college QB than Newton, last year.  Does that mean I should be screaming that it's because he's white?  Jackass. -7/3/11

Tebow's first season as a starter in the SEC, he went 9-4. Newton went undefeated. They both won the Heisman. You are continually pulling out race. I have not. Tebow just sucks compared to Newton. That's all. Nothing else. Ron Franklin?!

No, that qualifies him as an inaccurate QB playing in an era when there were very few, if any, QBs that threw for less than 10 interceptions in a season.  An era when linebackers and safeties roamed the middle of the field, laying out receivers before the ball even reached them.  In '83, the year Elway was drafted, the least amount of picks thrown by a team was 10.  In '10, 5 teams threw for less than 10 interceptions.  How do you know Cam won't do that?  Have you looked into your jaded crystal ball and seen something the rest of us haven't?  I doubt it, you're just assuming like everybody else.  The only difference is that you've spoken it as fact and the rest of us speak it as opinion.
For the record, I am a firm believer in "guys who don't get it, possibly getting it over time". I feel like John Elway falls in that category. He is a great model for the "athletic" QB. I don't have a " jaded crystal ball", more like a prism of 2011 NFL football for his talent. Bottom line. Elway sucked very early in his career. I know this is not Dan Reeves. Is this Mike Shanahan? Kyle Shanahan?!

No, it's a card.  It's an "Ace in the Hole", so to speak.  It's something that you use to gain an edge on someone else.  You slam it down like a domino and when anyone has the guts to retort, they're usually labelled a racist.  I know the game that's being played.  It's being played by people like you.    It's a joke and pathetic.  The rest of us get up everyday, go to work, and do what we gotta do to survive.  The rest of us aren't playing a game because life ain't a game, son.  It's jokers like you that perpetuate it as one instead of just busting your ass and living your life.  The majority of white people don't care about Cam Newton's race any more than they care about yours.  You'd just rather lump every white person in with a small few.  Hmmmmm, generalizing an entire race for the sins of a few.....sound familiar?
It's not a card. It's the hand that's been dealt. I accept that. YOU are the idiot who doesn't acknowledge or appreciate the game that is being played. You're the one with blinders on. The dealer sucks. Howvever, I've just learned to be good at the game. -Me/ 7/3/11 10:24am
Truly, I was just using the analogy that you used. Life is much more than a game. However, I choose not to discuss that existential realm of consciencousness with you at this time. I have not once used race as a card in this conversation between us. You seem desperate for it. I feel sorry for you. Anger and venom fuel you. To imply that I do not work everyday is absurd. Hilarious even. Mortgage, property taxes, health and dental ins. for a family of four and my daughter will be a senior in HS this year a 3.0 gp.a. Heading to college. The American Dream. You PINKO COMMY BASTARD!!! I also do not care about Newton's race. His is a hoss. Reminds me of Big Ben and Josh Freeman. I'm not mad at anyone. I'm proud to be black. Proud to be an American. Proud of my life. I love teaching Special Ed. Are you Special Ed.? I also love being better than you. You low level, short sighted, Archie Bunker-esque troll of a man. Is this the ghost of Carroll O'Connor?

And it's thoughts and words like yours that continues the racism that festers in this country.  Let's put it this way.  If the same percentage of white people voted for the white candidate as black people voted for Obama, Hillary Clinton would have won the primary in a landslide.  Stop pretending there's a game.
In two posts that I have read of yours, you brought up race five times. Four times unprovoked. I am only responding to your irresponsible, errant tirades. The posts are so wrong, I have to get them right.  If the same percentage of white people voted for the white candidate as black people voted for Obama, Hillary Clinton would have won the primary in a landslide. Man that sounds bitter, desperate and pitiful. If pigs had wings they could fly. Very after the fact calculations. Very... RUSH LIMBAUGH!!!! Hey, it's Rush.

THE PILLS ARE IN THE MAIL, Rush.

GAME OVER

Newton knows 90 percent of Panthers' playbook?

Super Bowl XXII MVP Doug Williams, out of Grambling University(HBCU), went 18 of 29 for 340 yards and 4td to 1int. An 80 yarder, 50 yarder, 27 yards and 4 yards, all in the second quarter. Not to mention he led the Bucs to a NFC title game, three years after they went winless. 127.9 passer rating in that Super Bowl. NEXT!!!
NEXT!!!!
Every President over the last fifty years has been a cocky, arrogant jerk (sans Jimmy Carter- 1 term Pres.). Now you decide to get on your cocky, arrogant high horse and judge. Very funny, as well as enlightening.
And what does that have to do with the current president?  I don't find him to be cocky or arrogant and I never would have voted for him because I seriously dislike his politics.  But I guess you do?

I misjudged Vince Young's head and Matt Flynn's heart. The rest of those guys can't carry his jock strap. I truly hope he can keep the distractions down to a minimum. He does not have any of the mechanical issues that Young had coming out of college. He is the most talented QB to come into the league since Michael Vick. I predicted a MVP season for Vick in his comeback. Just not last year. He is on his way to another level. Newton can reach that level too, eventually.

What are you talking about 98?! With that being said, Tebow's a bum. Cam Newton is infinitely more talented than Tebow. I know he got in trouble at Florida; however, it had to be hard at practice knowing you are that much better than the starter. Tebow won a championship and a Heisman as a starter, he just never won both in the same season in the SEC.

He threw 52 ints in his first 3 years in the league. I think that qualifies as a dumb QB. Wonderlic?! I've never seen a desk, No. 2 pencil, test or test proctor on a football field, while a game is being played.  By the way, Elway's first season of 47.5% comp, 7td, 14int and a 55 rating (I rounded up) is very Jimmy Clausen-ish. Cam will not do that, he's smarter than that. How DID Elway make it through Stanford? Hmm...

Newton knows 90 percent of Panthers' playbook?

hahaha - yep.  It's pretty easy to learn the playbook that has 5 plays in it and the reason the panthers finished in last place.  All that talk is to land endorsement contracts.  Once the season starts - J Russell part 2.  The whole plan is to get as much money now before everyone figures out he can't play at the pro level.  No Cam, they don't have mile wide hash marks and slow linebackers in the NFL so it looks like you will have to throw the ball (darn!).

Newton knows 90 percent of Panthers' playbook?

I think the guy is a prima donna and I, for one, will root for Newton to get destroyed and be out of football within a few years.
