We joked earlier that if you're weary of the Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning arguments, you could refocus your energies into deciding if Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg knows what he's talking about when he says that Michael Vick could be better than Steve Young.

Well, it seems there's no escaping Brady-Manning. NFL Network finally unveiled the No. 1 player in their countdown of the top 100, and Brady was the big winner. (In related news, Dhani Jones has asked for a recount.) Manning, of course, was No. 2.

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, who ended up fourth on the list, on why Brady was deserving of the honor:

“He’s not the biggest. He was never the strongest. He was never the fastest. He was overlooked. He went in the sixth round. So with that being said, all of the intangibles that a quarterback is supposed to have, they overlooked with him because it was burning from the inside of him. ...

“It’s a chess match because he understands every coverage, he understands every defense. And if you give it away too early, then the game is like checkers then for him. He plays it how he wants to play it. … And that’s what makes it frustrating playing against him; he always finds those mismatches. … You don’t find too many people playing (who are) willing to sacrifice that much time to do that. That’s why Tom Brady will always be considered one of the greatest of all time.”

Football Outsiders agrees with Lewis. Looking at the last five years of FO's quarterback efficiency ratings, Brady ranked fifth in 2006, and first in 2007, 2009 and 2010 (Brady missed all but 15 minutes of the 2008 season with a knee injury). Manning ranked first in '06 and second every season from '07-'10 (which includes '08, when Drew Brees was first).

So it's finally settled … except that Lewis' teammate Derrick Mason thinks that a) Peyton is "hands down" the NFL's best player and that b) Joe Flacco is the Ravens' "Michael Jordan."

We're still waiting to hear what Terrell Suggs thinks about all this.

Lewis on Brady: 'one of the greatest of all time'

It's amazing to me that people don't like Tom Brady.  A panel of his own peers that compete against him have chosen him # 1 in the league.  That alone stands as the testament to his greatness.  He is and will always be regarded as one of the best players the league has ever seen.  For a "never will be" like the rest of us that should be enough.  What makes him one of the greatest of all time is that it's never enough for him.  He has been high class his entire career. If the only point of negative interest to TB is that he "whines" that is evidence of the fact that nobody likes a consistent winner.  He competes and he competes better than anybody in the game.  How much does he "whine" post-game?.....Never!  How many times has he been involved in off the field issues?.....Never!  How many times have you heard him talk negatively about other players or people?.....Never!  How many times have you witnessed him beat your team with ease?.....Repeatedly.  Peyton Manning is a winner, Joe Montana was a winner, Johhny U was a winner (r.i.p.) and Tom Brady is a winner.  If you love and respect football, appreciate what the game's best contribute cause brotha they don't come round like this often.

Lewis on Brady: 'one of the greatest of all time'

Brady is the one of the top 3 ever. People don't like him because he has a model girlfreind , leads a charmed life and pretty much has it all.  But people on blogs opinions are usually mean, mad and jaded....they just want to stir the pot...Brady the best ever? maybe! One of the best ever yes .
All of them have model girlfriends.  Even guys like Jake Plummer and Jeff Garcia have model girlfriends/wives (who are hotter than Brady's imo).  That's not the reason people don't think he's the best.  Learn to accept other people's opinions on something like this, or don't get onto the internet.

Absolutely no way is Brady better than Montana.  You put Montana in the current era football with the 5 yard contact rule, tapes on the other team's defense, QB protections rules and Montana would go apeshit every year.  But if you put Brady into Montana's era, Brady would never win anything and probably never get over 20 TDs in a season.  Everytime I see Brady get hit he crumbles mentally...that is why the Jets beat them so much.

Lewis on Brady: 'one of the greatest of all time'

Toms the greatest QB of all time. I feel it's a toss up between Bronko Nagurski and Jerry Rice as for who is the greatest player of all time. Bronko dominated every single down, you gotta go wat back ask our grandfathers. No one will ever break Jerry Rices records, he is far and wide the best player at his possition.Every other position there's someone comparible. This coming from a fan that hates the Winers and thinks Montana was no better than Dave Krieg just had the guys around him.

Lewis on Brady: 'one of the greatest of all time'

Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Roger Craig........compared to Deion Branch, Troy Brown and a nobody at running back.

There is NO comparison between Montant and Brady.   Brady has done substantially more with significantly less.   Give Brady those weapons and he'd never lose a Super Bowl.
