The most prized free agent in the upcoming offseason -- as previously noted by our own Pete Prisco -- is cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

Many a team is expected to compete for Asomugha and, as we've previously discussed, there have been insane rumors about Nnamdi pulling in upwards of $19 million a year. One of the teams many folks expected to chase the former Raider were the Detroit Lions, an up-and-coming team in need of a cornerback.

However, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported on Monday afternoon that Asomugha is "too expensive" for the Lions' taste and that they'll look elsewhere for secondary help.

"Elsewhere" isn't exactly bad -- Jonathan Joseph, Antonio Cromartie and Ike Taylor are all fantastic "consolation" prizes for teams that don't end up landing Asomugha.

In fact, fellow EoF blogger Ryan Wilson recently noted that Joseph might actually be the "best free-agent cornerback option," simply because his value at $X million a year might be surpass whatever Nnamdi offers at $XX, particularly at his age."
Summer of Nnamdi

Birkett notes as much, pointing out that the Lions would like to add one of those guys "if the price is right."

Of course, none of this precludes Detroit from at least chasing Asomugha, though based on this, they'll eventually pull out of the running when his price tag gets too high.

If and when they do, though, it may be an indication of how much smarter the Lions' current regime is than the last.

Report: Asomugha 'too expensive' for Lions

As much as I would love for the Lions to try and sign Asomugha, but not for the rumored $19M that mentioned above. For that amount, the Lions can sign two CB's for that amount. Now as long as they sign two solid CB's and not any "bums"....I'll be happy! Now I will be upset if they don't pay Asomugha $19M,but turn around and give another CB that amount when they could have sign Asomugha.....I will "go off" like hell!!!! Be and spend smart Lions....don't put yourself "behind the 8-ball" overpaying for talent unless it's a sure thing that the player or players will be worth every cent!!!!

Wow $19 million a year would be ridiculous.  If someone pays that much shame on them. I like Nnamdi Asommugha and he is a really good CB but that is just too much money.

I hope some team signs him so he is off the Raiders and hopefully it's not the Chiefs or Broncos.

Let's get the NFL season started !!!

Lions should definitely sign Joseph, and pick up a good safety in the FA class too.  After that, all they need is LBs and OL before they're ready to continuously beat the Packers and Bears.

$14-15M is about what anyone is likely to pay.  Really he should get maybe $12-14M at most.  I'd rather get a pass rusher.

What's up with these Lions? They are looking to be very good in the very near future...scary thought.  Of course there's always Julius Peppers to assure no Quarterback help!!!

Another Will Brinson blod that falls in the "no duh" category. If someone pays 19 million a year, or nearly 1/6th of the projected salary cap they are deciding to lose with one WR well covered. Sorry CBs out there...teams in today's NFL need a collection of good DBs, not one great one to win consistently. His presence sure hasn't helped the Raiders make the playoffs.

It's like saving up all your money for a down payment on a new house, and on the way to look at some prospects with your agent, you see a shiny red convertable corvette in a used car lot. You tell your agent you've changed your mind about the house, go in and get that corvette you always wanted instead. You KNOW you couldn't go home and present what you've done to your wife because she'll tongue lash the daylights out of you. That's what Lion fans need to do if management is crazy enough to spend all that dough on Nnamdi aka "the used red convertable corvette". It would be nice, but it's "IRRESPONSIBLE!!"
