Fox: 'Running back is our No. 1 priority'

If at any point during the Denver coaching transition you thought that the 2011 Broncos would resemble the 2010 Broncos, well, you must not have realized that John Elway went out and hired John Fox.

Because Fox, the former Panthers coach well-known for pounding the rock and focusing on defense, confirmed again recently that Denver's gonna focus on the run in the coming season. Oh, and that he doesn't really like Knowshon Moreno all that much.

"We were 13th on offense last year. I certainly want more balance. We've got to run the ball more and better, and (another) running back is our No. 1 priority [in free agency]," Fox said, per the Denver Post.

All right, he doesn't directly insult Moreno and/or call him a "third-down back," and you could make the case that Fox knows he needs two solid running backs.

But come on -- it's clear that he's not that high on Moreno. And it's also clear that he'll pursue his former star, DeAngelo Williams, who should be an unrestricted free agent under the new (old?) collective bargaining rules.

If he doesn't land DeAngelo -- and there's a decent chance he won't, as both Carolina and Miami will be fighting for Williams' services -- there are other options out there, including Cedric Benson, Ronnie Brown and Willis McGahee.

It's all but certain that Denver will be able to pick one up too -- Fox's tendency to let his running backs tote the rock with great frequency makes his offense attractive for running backs.

Unless you're Knowshon Moreno anyway.

Fox: 'Running back is our No. 1 priority'

Broncosteve, a word about Jacobs. As an Eagles fan, I've seen alot of him. Firstly, he is NOT fast. Secondly, for a "between the tackles" back, he coughs up the ball WAY too much. That's not to say he won't work in Denver because he just might, but he is far from a stud. If anything I'd say he's been one of the most overrated backs in the past 5 years.

I agree with you 100% Cantstopfire.  Jacobs would be the ideal back in our offense.  Big, strong, fast, and more importantly...ANGRY!  Moreno was/is a complete and total bust.  I honestly believe we need to sign Brown AND Jacobs and just keep Moreno in case of injury.  He (in my opinion) was the worst draft pick in the history of the Denver Broncos.  Yeah I know some will say Marcus Nash..some will say Willie Middlebrooks....but Moreno was picked #12 1 pick ahead of Brian Orakpo....when the previous year the Denver "D" ranked 29th.  Add to that you had a healthy Peyton Hillis coming back, and the Moreno pick makes me want to punch McDaniels in the face.

i pheel you, they say he will maybe pursue ced benson, willis "old" mcgahee,or ronnie brown, wtf??? thats no different then keeping what they have already, and i bet that whoever lands moreno if not in denver will get a hell of a back, who is still young and has not seen his prime.

Fox: 'Running back is our No. 1 priority'

Fox is going to pursue Williams, that's a given. I think he is going to trade away Orton for value and bring in Delhomme to back Tebow and mentor him. Delhomme is an expert with his system and would know how to teach it. He could even start and do well as he knows Fox's system. Fox knows what he's doing, I wouldn't worry too much. Just get used to hearing, "it is what it is".

I don't understand

The Broncos already have Lawrence Maroney and LenDale White

What more could they need?

Two key free agents are missing from this list of possiblities for the broncos. Both are on the Giants. Jacobs and Bradshaw...I am obviously a Giants fan an im not comepletly sure who they will keep but with Jacobs cry baby attitude this season being put in slot 2...i wouldnt be suprised if he goes. He would have a break out season for the Broncos. Hed be angry and out to prove something. And he would be the best player on that team. He needs that. If all the weight is on his shoulders he performs. Giants have too many weapons to do that. I dont think anyhting will happen like that until Bradshaw goes to keep the effin ball in your hands camp, but Couphlin runs that and Tiki did well after.
