ShanahanPosted by Josh Katzowitz

The Redskins weren’t big-time players in free agency last offseason -- though they did make a pretty big-time trade for Donovan McNabb, which didn’t exactly, um, work out for anybody -- but NFL.com’s Jason LaCanfora writes that the previous attitude will change once the lockout ends.

Apparently, the primary objective for coach Mike Shanahan is to sign wide receiver Santonio Holmes, though you can be sure the Jets will put up a fight for him, while players like Ravens G Marshall Yanda, Packers DL Cullen Jenkins and Jets DL Kris Jenkins also are wanted by the Redskins.

LaCanfora writes that the team very well could land the Jenkins brothers, because neither will be as in demand as Holmes and Yanda.

If the Redskins were to sign Holmes, there’s a decent chance that WR Santana Moss -- who’s been in Washington for the past six seasons -- would not return (though he has stated that he wants to stay with the Redskins).

Not surprisingly, the team doesn’t plan to keep McNabb or DL/troublemaker Albert Haynesworth. Washington most likely will release McNabb once the lockout is over. But the Redskins still will want to find somebody who will take Haynesworth in a trade, in part because they don’t want Haynesworth to get his way and in part because they want to control where Haynesworth plays next year (ie. not anywhere in the NFC East).

But as LaCanfora writes, this will be a big offseason for Shanahan, because he “already has fallen under scrutiny following clashes with top players and acute struggles on both offense and defense during his first season in Washington.”

Moss wants to stay in Washington because he doesn't have a job right now and he's tight with Mr. Snyder who overpays.

Shannahannagins is over rated. Easy to look like a genius with a couple of HOF QBs, before and since old Mike has been more moron that genius. How many spots did he move up to draft a learning disabled QB is his last few years in Denver? Personnel is not his thing.

Whats with the all the Santana Moss talk? He is average at best and not worth the money imo. I really would like to see the vikings trading for Haynesworth. He is an azz, but so is Shanahan. Albert is still a beast. Ask any center or guard in the league.

The redskins suffered through a bad year last because of the Shanahans.

Redskins will be busy in free agency

Once the lockout is officially over, the feeding frenzy for free agents will be unleashed. The piranha-infested waters of the Amazon will look tame compared to the torrential downpour of phonecalls and signings that teams will make as they go into scramble mode to add much-needed players to fit various systems and formations. This will be a critical period for the Redskins, and especially for head coach Mike Shanahan. After the Haynesworth and McNabb debacles and the Silent Night signings of last year, Shanahan will be under the microscope to make upgrades on all levels of performance. The glaring spotlight is, of course, on the QB position. McNabb will undoubtedly be traded, leaving Rex Grossman and John Beck as two huge question marks to run the offense. The situation dictates that they go after a proven commodity such as Kevin Kolb ( wrong Eagles QB last time ), Matt Hasselbeck, Carson Palmer, Marc Bulger or several others. Your team will go only as far as your QB takes it. RB still a big question beyond Ryan Torain... Redskins took three WRs in the draft to give Santana Moss help. Would like to see Leonard Hankerson develop this season... a young WR with size is badly needed for this team. And, as usual, OL and DL are must-gets. Redskins added good potential in the draft this year, but Shanahan needs to step up this year and land a few key ingredients to keep the Redskins moving forward.

If they would like to win this year, they need to get busy.
