HarrisonPosted by Josh Katzowitz

In an interesting admission today, the writer of the controversial James Harrison piece for Men’s Journal magazine told Harrison to do whatever he needs to do in order to make peace with his quarterback.

“We talked about 11 o’clock yesterday morning,” Paul Solotaroff told ESPN radio, via Pro Football Talk. “Look, James is the guy who’s got to live with Ben for the next three years.... So as I told James, ‘Listen, whatever you’ve got to say to mend fences is perfectly fine with me.’”

That’s why Harrison told Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger that Solotaroff twisted his words in the story.

But it also sounds like Solotaroff didn’t use all the quotes he could have, and apparently, Harrison got really nasty in the interview (it, of course, would be a surprise if Harrison wasn't nasty)

Harrison's Big Day
“I filled up three notebooks, I don’t know how many hours of digital tape, and I cut so much stuff from this piece,” Solotaroff said. “There is just acres of stuff James said that’s compelling and amusing and riveting. And that wasn’t the only thing he said about Ben.”

In addition to bashing Roethlisberger and RB Rashard Mendenhall in the piece that ran -- he also said some not-so-nice things about commissioner Roger Goodell -- Solotaroff left on the cutting room floor the quote in which Harrison called Cleveland’s Colt McCoy “an idiot kid quarterback.”

But you know what’s also kind of weird about this interview? Solotaroff seems like a HUGE fan of Harrison.

“I was furious at the way James got done by Goodell last year,” Solotaroff said. “I thought making him the poster boy for this abrupt and arbitrary rule change . . . was about the most wrongheaded thing you could do, particularly since Goodell seemed bent on singling James out.”

That’s fine for Solotaroff to feel that way. But now it sounds like Solotaroff is protecting Harrison from getting into even more trouble, simply because he likes Harrison so much.

And when you basically admit to that in a radio interview, your credibility as an objective reporter will get called into question. As it should be.

What else did Harrison tell magazine reporter?

wow, everyone jumping on harrison like they know him, you don't know him, i will agree that he is violent on the field and I personally do not care for that, someone will get hurt and already has because of him, there are ramifications that he should be given, he needs to at least acknowledge that he needs to at least show some remorse for the hits that are considered illegal, everything else though guys, there are much worse people in the world than james harrison, much worse, and why will be in trouble when football is over? why will he be in jail? what a bunch of know nothing losers posting on here, I do NOT LIKE HARRISON, but I will will not go as far as to say he is a criminal, or will be dead after he is done playing football, or call him a gangster, where do you losers get this?  wake up, don;t embarrass me, and I am as WHITE as they come, you sound RACIST to me!!    every one of you who goes after him calling him those things, you want to say something about race but are scared!!  I for one will never go that route, I DISLIKE Harrison, but I don;t know him, neither do you, wake up, it is 2011!!
A sensible disliker of James Harrison? I wasn't even sure they existed anymore. I don't mind people who don't like the guy, that's their choice. At least be reasonable about it though.

James Harrison just prove that you can be a good football player and still be a idiot.
What's your point? A lot of football players have proven this long before James Harrison and will long after James Harrison retires.

Another guy who is gonna spend more time behind bars than free after his NFL career winds down!!!!!
Yeah, sure. James Harrison is this generation's Jack Lambert to Steeler fans. He'll be fine once he retires. Actually, I think he should take over for Faildell as NFL commissioner once he decides to retire. He'd be a million times better!

What else did Harrison tell magazine reporter?

What Harrison had to say about God-dell is probably understated as the moronic commissioner is worse than a bad joke...he could be best described as an anti-Christ.  Having said that, Harrison should make peace with Big Ben and Mendenhall unless he wants out of the Burgh.  Since the later makes little sense, what could his motivation for tearing into team mates?

My advice to James is continue his rant towards the myopic, if not outright dupe, of Kraft, Jones, and the other populist owners but lay of fellow Steelers.
They will make peace with each other. This won't even be an issue. Big Ben's controversy also turned out to be a non-issue as well when he came back from his unjustifyable four game suspension.

What else did Harrison tell magazine reporter?

Sounds like this guy was initially trying to protect Harrison, then felt the need to protect his own intgrity as a reporter when Harrison took his advice. One looks to be as dumb as the other. Freedom of speech is a great thing. I get it. But being an ahole just because you can be? This guy is just a jerk.

James Harrison said some stupid things and I think that both white and black people can agree on that.
He shouldn't have gone after Roethlisberger or Mendenhall, that I'll agree on. As far as Faildell is concerned, I love what he said and wish more players around the league would follow his lead as well as Kevin Burnett's lead. Also, the race comment is stupid. Reminds me of the QB Dog Killer defenders who say people only hate on him because he's a black guy who tortured dogs.

I don't think it's a stretch to say that picture of Hairrson will not improve his perception amongst white people.
I'm a white guy and will weigh in on this topic. The picture? Not so much, but my perception of him isn't any worse because of it either. The reason why I like James Harrison even more now than I did two days ago is because he is rightfully blasting the idiot the NFL has as a commissioner when most guys other than himself and Kevin Burnett won't do it.

"tell him whatever you need to to mend the fence" and then you follow that up by saying he told james that to the public. kinda defeats the point dosent it?

This coming from Josh Katzowitz? Honestly, how's the glass house Joshie?

Maybe, unlike you, the writer actually has some judgment and a conscience. He also doesn't need to make wise-acre remarks that are never funny.

I find it refreshing that a writer actually has some empathy for people. If more did, maybe we wouldn't have to read all  the TMZ-type crud we read on sites like this.

I can't believe some of you are taking sides!

I'm a big time Steelers fan and even I know they're both F'ups. How can you defend Ben or James? They're both idiots giving the team a bad look. Ben allegedly raped a young girl and James should be man enough to tell his teammates what he thinks of them and not make it a public issue.. oh and he's a dumb ass for that picture with the guns. Now that's typical ignorance. Kids look up to you, moron!!! I've never been more embarrassed of being a Steelers fan.
