Cedric Benson arrested for assault

For the most part, the NFL has avoided a run of players getting in trouble with the law while not under team supervision. (Kenny Britt being the exception, of course.) The news, however, that Cedric Benson was arrested in Austin, Texas, early Sunday morning won't help that cause.

UPDATE (8:45 p.m. ET): According to wire reports, Benson was released from jail on Sunday following an arrest on an assault charge, the second year in a row he has gotten into trouble in his home state.

More details:
Travis County sheriff's spokesman Roger Wade said Benson was arrested in downtown Austin on a misdemeanor count of assault with bodily injury with family violence. Benson attorney Sam Bassett said in a statement the arrest followed "a conflict" between Benson and a male former roommate.

Wade said Benson posted a $10,000 bond and was released just before 2 p.m.

Bassett considers the "family violence" aspect of the charge erroneous "since the alleged male victim no longer is Mr. Benson's household member and was not a household member for the past few days." Conviction of assault with family violence would draw a stiffer penalty than simple assault.
The Bengals were predictably mum on the situation. "In cases like this, we don't feel it's appropriate to comment before there's some kind of legal resolution," team spokesman Jack Brennan said.

Benson will be an unrestricted free agent in 2011 (assuming a reversion to old CBA rules), and there was a good chance that he could land a nice contract because of the market's demand for running backs.

Benson/Bengals Offseason

This arrest -- along with the fact that Benson has a previous assault charge from June 2010, in Austin -- won't do much to boost his value.

And depending on whether commissioner Roger Goodell and the league can enforce the personal conduct policy while the players are locked out, Benson could end up facing a suspension, something he miraculously avoided the last time he was arrested for assault.

Cedric Benson arrested for assault

Hey LTsucks; calm down bro with the jackass and idiot comments. Your law practice must be kind of slow this time of year for you to get in those eloquent comments about the definition of assault. Maybe you're just trying to pass the time while awaiting the jury's conviction verdict for your client. That statute book you speak of helps me get some sleep every now and then. I don't think I've ever got to page 5 before I was completely out.

Cedric Benson arrested for assault

GrimUSMC, you're an absolute idiot. Assault is not intentionally injuring. I've taken the bar and I practice CRIMINAL LAW for money. You are 100% incorrect that assault is "injuring" someone. Maybe there are state specific laws that define it that way but in Florida assault is defined as the threat of injury. Also, on the MBE (multi-state bar exam) assault is defined that way. So before YOU run your mouth off you might want to pick up a statute book or actually learn something about the law. Jackass.

Cedric Benson arrested for assault

Even though he has had an assault arrest in the past the information in this story doesn't give us enough to know what was going on in this situation.  I do think that with him being a possible free agent for the NFL that Benson really needs to stay clean so teams don't get scared off.  But other than that lets see when the story gets explained with the details of what went on.

Cedric Benson arrested for assault

It's looking more and more that Ray Lewis' dire prediction of crime and mayhem sweeping the country sans NFL football is becoming reality. Ray Ray thought the fans would be the group leading the charge, but it's becoming apparent that these unemployed knuckleheads are law enforcement's worst nightmare.

Cedric Benson arrested for assault

Are any of you people reading the article?  The man got into a fight with an ex-roommate.... we have no idea of the roommate was trying to get back into the house, or if the roommate was started the fight, or anything... People are basing everything off the fact that someone pressed charges against him... someone who could have been bitter... we don't know...  the fact that Cedric is famous and rich and obviously has temper/anger issues puts him as a prime target for these kinds of events...  I am not condoning the arrest or the event that led to the arrest, but to jump all over the guy before you even know what REALLY happened is ridiculous... Why is it that there are 1000's of arrests for fights at bars, concerts, colleges with every day people, yet these people can all go on with their lives.... How many DUIs are there nationally every weekend where business men, doctors, lawyers, construction workers, etc. get pulled over, yet if an athlete does it he's the devil...  c'mon people.... the double standard is unbelievable...  let's wait to hear what REALLY happened and go from there...  Don't jump to conclusions based on his past or the past of other athletes...

Wah, Wah. They make millions. Wah, Wah they should conduct themselves as such. Wah, Wah, Wah, Wah.

Com'on ya'll it's time to get a life. The man got arrested. So what. It's him spending a few hours in jail not me so i could care less.

There are a lot of things I dont understand about people but one of the biggest is why do you care what others do with their life if it dosent affect you.

Once people start minding thei own business this world will be a better place.
