Cedric Benson arrested for assault

For the most part, the NFL has avoided a run of players getting in trouble with the law while not under team supervision. (Kenny Britt being the exception, of course.) The news, however, that Cedric Benson was arrested in Austin, Texas, early Sunday morning won't help that cause.

UPDATE (8:45 p.m. ET): According to wire reports, Benson was released from jail on Sunday following an arrest on an assault charge, the second year in a row he has gotten into trouble in his home state.

More details:
Travis County sheriff's spokesman Roger Wade said Benson was arrested in downtown Austin on a misdemeanor count of assault with bodily injury with family violence. Benson attorney Sam Bassett said in a statement the arrest followed "a conflict" between Benson and a male former roommate.

Wade said Benson posted a $10,000 bond and was released just before 2 p.m.

Bassett considers the "family violence" aspect of the charge erroneous "since the alleged male victim no longer is Mr. Benson's household member and was not a household member for the past few days." Conviction of assault with family violence would draw a stiffer penalty than simple assault.
The Bengals were predictably mum on the situation. "In cases like this, we don't feel it's appropriate to comment before there's some kind of legal resolution," team spokesman Jack Brennan said.

Benson will be an unrestricted free agent in 2011 (assuming a reversion to old CBA rules), and there was a good chance that he could land a nice contract because of the market's demand for running backs.

Benson/Bengals Offseason

This arrest -- along with the fact that Benson has a previous assault charge from June 2010, in Austin -- won't do much to boost his value.

And depending on whether commissioner Roger Goodell and the league can enforce the personal conduct policy while the players are locked out, Benson could end up facing a suspension, something he miraculously avoided the last time he was arrested for assault.

Cedric Benson arrested for assault

Most of Ced's fellow alums would like him to quit being such a jerk.  It is time to grow up.  Whether he can command a big contract in free agency and stay a star are beside the point.  I am tired of him being an embarrassment.  He is continue to follow in the convoluted world of his idol Ricky Williams.  Ugh!!!

Cedric Benson arrested for assault

Okay what exactly is all the hub bub about?  He "assaulted" an individual he knew in his home.  It wasn't like he was menacing the streets finding anonymous, innocent citizens.  So, basically you guys are getting all bent out of shape because he had an altercation/fight with someone he knew.  No that never happens every day to black, white, Hispanic, or Asian private citizens.  How is this news in any way?  Did they charge him with felonious assault?  No.  That would imply it is a misdemeanor, meaning that it wasn't "that serious."  So why is everyone so up in arms about something so simplistic.

He could have punched him once, and he is to go to jail for that?  See, and then people wonder why I don't get wild like I could.  Law enforcement nowadays take men from their homes for just grabbing their women by the arms.  You think I am going to jail unless it is really important and serious to me?  Some people think that they can talk any way they want to people.  Some people just don't take it that lightly and retaliate.  Yeah and please save me it is only a battle of words argument; or the freedom of speech rhetoric.

Everybody reacts differently to situations.  Some guys just don't put up with crap and will immediately check you.  You better know who you are dealing with accordingly.  Just because some of your friends are soft and take your s#!_ doesn't mean everybody else will.  Just a lesson for you younger folks.  I am sure the guy had penty of warning before hand that it was in his best interest to drop the matter and or leave his residence.  Benson may be "crazy" to some degree but he isn't THAT stupid.  He knows he has a target on his back in his hometown.  I doubt he escalated knowing he would more than likely end up in jail, unless he felt threatened.

Cedric Benson arrested for assault

Seems like these guys need structure..they need someone telling them what to do, what time to wake up..eat..sleep..etc.  Too much free time on their hands..they can't stay still..like little kids.

When the cats away..the mice will play.  The father figure "Dictator Goodell" will show them who's boss real soon.

Cedric Benson arrested for assault

Another day..another black football player arrested.  There needs to be a study done as to why black football players are always in trouble with the law.

Which "black players" are always in trouble, Not-soWiseguy1991?  All of them?  Most of them?  Some of them?  Or do you just enjoy generalizing?
As to the study you request, would you require the same study to show why there's such a large number of black players in the league to begin with, possibly a larger percentage than in the general population?  And if there are, why would you expect the number of black (or white) players in legal trouble not to reflect--roughly--the overall proportion of black (or white) players in the league?  Have you checked very carefully to see how that comes out?
The stats do not lie.
About what?  If the stats show that the vast majority of black (or white) players don't get into legal trouble, would little old you conclude from that that most players from that group are fine?  Apparently you wouldn't conclude that.  I wonder why you wouldn't?  I think we can all guess why.

Ray Lewis is right.... Remeber all of those robberies, assaults and murders during the last baseball strike? It happens during all professional sports disruptions. Remeber Donald Fehr was arrested for assaulting one of the owners with a cat o nine tails?
