Cedric Benson arrested for assault

For the most part, the NFL has avoided a run of players getting in trouble with the law while not under team supervision. (Kenny Britt being the exception, of course.) The news, however, that Cedric Benson was arrested in Austin, Texas, early Sunday morning won't help that cause.

UPDATE (8:45 p.m. ET): According to wire reports, Benson was released from jail on Sunday following an arrest on an assault charge, the second year in a row he has gotten into trouble in his home state.

More details:
Travis County sheriff's spokesman Roger Wade said Benson was arrested in downtown Austin on a misdemeanor count of assault with bodily injury with family violence. Benson attorney Sam Bassett said in a statement the arrest followed "a conflict" between Benson and a male former roommate.

Wade said Benson posted a $10,000 bond and was released just before 2 p.m.

Bassett considers the "family violence" aspect of the charge erroneous "since the alleged male victim no longer is Mr. Benson's household member and was not a household member for the past few days." Conviction of assault with family violence would draw a stiffer penalty than simple assault.
The Bengals were predictably mum on the situation. "In cases like this, we don't feel it's appropriate to comment before there's some kind of legal resolution," team spokesman Jack Brennan said.

Benson will be an unrestricted free agent in 2011 (assuming a reversion to old CBA rules), and there was a good chance that he could land a nice contract because of the market's demand for running backs.

Benson/Bengals Offseason

This arrest -- along with the fact that Benson has a previous assault charge from June 2010, in Austin -- won't do much to boost his value.

And depending on whether commissioner Roger Goodell and the league can enforce the personal conduct policy while the players are locked out, Benson could end up facing a suspension, something he miraculously avoided the last time he was arrested for assault.

Report: Cedric Benson arrested for assault

Of the 1,952 players who will be on NFL rosters this year (counting practice squad and not counting IR) there have been several that have been arrested. The comments here seem to indicate that commenters expect the NFL players (apparently all of them) to take such actions. This is very short sighted. The NFL does an amazing job of policing its players (even now when there is no CBA, Goodell will find a way to get their attention.) For such a violent sport it is impressive how few of those 1.952 players ever get the attention of the law.

But remember also, we are in a dead month when every story is blown up. I don't know what Benson did or did not do. In most cases such as this we will never know because it is rare for the victim to cooperate (it might mean losing their source of support.) I do believe in the American notion that an accused is innocent until found guilty (even though Goodell believes guilty is what he finds and not the DA or the jury.)

As for Benson, since this has apparently happened before, I hope he gets help in anger management or substance abuse or whatever is behind these incidents so that they will not recur. The NFL need its players to be outstanding citizens on and off the field to promote the sport and to protect the community.

Report: Cedric Benson arrested for assault

Benson arrested? I am absolutely shocked!!  On second thought Laughing maybe I am not.  I bet he will follow Pac Man (thug man) Jones and say "I was arrested for no reason."

Funny how we never hear about players such as Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Joe Flacco, etc getting arrested.  I wonder why? Wink

Ignorant, lazy rich kids with too much idle time on their hands who are so used to getting their way that when something arises they can't intelligently handle, they revert to what they know best ... violence.  So sad.

Report: Cedric Benson arrested for assault

ummmmmmm, no.  First, it depends on the specific laws of each state.  Second, Assault is the act of intentioanlly injuring OR threatening to cause injury to someone and putting them in legitimate fear of such injury.  So it could be either instance OR both.  And so its clear, something as tiny as a scratch on your skin is considered injury.  If you are going to spout off like you know the law, then know what you are talking about.

Just more proof that the Bears were right to cut him loose and wrong to have ever wasted a draft pick on him.

And don't "give props to Ray Lewis".  His comments were absolutely stupid.  There will be a crime wave because of no football?  You're telling me Cedric Benson got in trouble with the law because of the lockout????

Please.

Benson is a thug, pure and simple.  He's proven it time and again.

ok this is gonna be an unpopular comment, b/c this is the NFL board, and most of us are probably diehards, but really why are we rooting hard for the lockout to end?  do you really want to spend your money anyway on tix or directtv to watch some guys who would be out beating people up if not for employment in pads and helmets.  i think that i will do just fine if there is no nfl this fall.

If it happens all the time, is it news? Might be better better to cover the bungles when they stay out of trouble.  Less reporting but at least it's newsworthy.  Gotta give props to Ray Lewis, he seems to be right about the crime rate going up during a lockout.  NFL please end this already so we can get our players off the street and back on the field where they belong.

too many ungrateful gangsters from bad upringings in the league.  people making millions on strike and cant even appreciate the blessing in their life - great athletic ability.   there are people who want to work hard, but have no job, or a bad job b/c of the bad economy and they are not gifted with great athletic ability.  and this is not to say that they owners are much better or that i side with them.  the whole lockouts = greedy geezers versus greedy gansters.  i am done with the NFL for a while.  I think that I will follow d-2 college ball this fall, or northwestern or navy and air force football.  in general, kids raised ok, with respect, go to class, play for the love of the game, and dont bitch and whine about money.
