Cedric Benson arrested for assault

For the most part, the NFL has avoided a run of players getting in trouble with the law while not under team supervision. (Kenny Britt being the exception, of course.) The news, however, that Cedric Benson was arrested in Austin, Texas, early Sunday morning won't help that cause.

UPDATE (8:45 p.m. ET): According to wire reports, Benson was released from jail on Sunday following an arrest on an assault charge, the second year in a row he has gotten into trouble in his home state.

More details:
Travis County sheriff's spokesman Roger Wade said Benson was arrested in downtown Austin on a misdemeanor count of assault with bodily injury with family violence. Benson attorney Sam Bassett said in a statement the arrest followed "a conflict" between Benson and a male former roommate.

Wade said Benson posted a $10,000 bond and was released just before 2 p.m.

Bassett considers the "family violence" aspect of the charge erroneous "since the alleged male victim no longer is Mr. Benson's household member and was not a household member for the past few days." Conviction of assault with family violence would draw a stiffer penalty than simple assault.
The Bengals were predictably mum on the situation. "In cases like this, we don't feel it's appropriate to comment before there's some kind of legal resolution," team spokesman Jack Brennan said.

Benson will be an unrestricted free agent in 2011 (assuming a reversion to old CBA rules), and there was a good chance that he could land a nice contract because of the market's demand for running backs.

Benson/Bengals Offseason

This arrest -- along with the fact that Benson has a previous assault charge from June 2010, in Austin -- won't do much to boost his value.

And depending on whether commissioner Roger Goodell and the league can enforce the personal conduct policy while the players are locked out, Benson could end up facing a suspension, something he miraculously avoided the last time he was arrested for assault.

Wow...Pacman, Cedric, Britt... then you have Harrison's stupid mouth....who the hell do these chumps think they are? I mean really??? Don't they have an NFL "class" that teaches these nuckleheads to act right and learn to respect what they have been giving/earned? Gimme a break, I keep thinking... "They can't be that moronic!"...and they keep proving me wrong....

Sadly, just like Harrison's scenario, many of these guys can't say the right thing (or do the right thing) unless someone writes it for them ( or does it for them)....just like his scripted apology to his teammates.

Grow a set and grow-up kids of the NFL....hell, my 3 year old daugter has more common sense than this....

Report: Cedric Benson arrested for assault

Sincerely from a Steelers fan who's been hearing my team is the biggest bunch of thugs-thank you again Bengals!!
Steelers star players recently:
Big Ben - accused of rape - twice   Mendenhall - nice tweets on 9/11
   Hines Ward - DUI
James Harrison - domestic viloence and recent comments about both teammates and the commish

Troy Pol_____m___lu has been the only one not in the new for the wrong things lately.... sure the Bengals have had issues in the past, but if you look at it objectivly, the Steelers have been far worse over the past 2 seasons.

ha hasn't had any sucess, he's a thug buster. Reggie Bush, with out the cash.
Cedric Benson is vastly different than Reggie Bush and it's not even close.  It's questionable on which you would rather have as a player at the moment - Ced is older, but more solid and a true RB you can give the ball to between the tackles, Reggie is younger but is more versitile... but for the money and value, its Ced Ben all day long over Reggie Bush.

As far as Marvin Lewis - he's not the problem with the team.  When he first arrived he ran a tight ship and cleaned things up pretty quickly.  It wasn't until after Chris Henry had his issues and Mike Brown forced Marvin to keep him - essentially cutting his head coache's legs at the knees.  From that point on, the players all knew they only had to worry about Mike Brown and not the coach.  Take away Mike's meddaling and Marvin could have been a helluva coach for the Bengals.

I am by no means a fan of Texas football, but the generalization that Cedric Benson's personal actions reflect the values (or lack thereof) of the University of Texas or their football team is ignorant.

"Per Doyle".  Mr. Brinson writes like he's having a private conversation.  Take a journalism class, already.

Ced has always been a thug idiot, dating back to his time with the Bears.  When the Bengals signed him, he was a questionable guy.  But that was OK, because the Bengals pride themselves on being a questionable team comprised of questionable players.  They doubled down on the coach which, not surprisingly, coincides with more of the same on the police blotter. Couple that with an owner that won't invest in his team up to the cap.  What a crappy organization from top to bottom.
