Report: Kyle Orton on trading block already

The NFL's trading season, per the official 2011 NFL calendar, officially opened at 10:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday. But there are already some names (Kevin Kolb!) on the trading block; go ahead and add Kyle Orton of the Broncos to that list.

That's because the Broncos reportedly put Orton up on the block, per Mike Klis of the Denver Post. Klis writes that Denver will "begin the business" of the NFL's season by putting his name out there and will be "entertaining offers for Orton" per sources.

However, Klis doesn't necessarily mention precisely what the Broncos would want in return -- we've previously heard they think he's worth a second-rounder -- but he does say if they don't get the proper value in return they won't bite.

In other words, despite the fact that Tim Tebow's been organizing workouts with receivers this offseason, and despite the reports that the starting quarterback job is "his to lose," well, he's probably still going to end up competing with Orton up until the start of the year. (And, yes, technically Brady Quinn.)

There's definitely a market for quarterbacks out there, but two things really pop out about the way Denver is handling this situation. One, even in Madden, players aren't thrilled with their front office when they're publicly lobbed on the trade market like a piece of meat. And while I understand Denver is all about transparency and yet hasn't said that they'll trade him, come on -- you don't publicly shop a guy for mediocre value and then expect him to come back and be all smiles and sunshine.

Secondly, everyone realizes this is John Fox coaching this club right? John Elway might be in charge of the player and personnel moves, but if we're talking about a Fox-coached football team, you have to remember that this is going to be a run-first, keep-it-safe offense.

And while Tebow might very well be able to play the role of game manager for Foxy, it would be somewhat surprising to see the coach entrust his first year on the job to someone so young.

That being said, if the Broncos can find someone willing to give up a second-round pick for Orton, Fox may not have a choice.

Which Kyle Orton have you been watching?

Does well against 3rd stringers when  Broncos are down by 35.

@Cuda, sadly I realize this. My point was more so that Denver would be better off with Orton than with Tebow.

tmlad - there's a reason people want to trade for Orton and not Tebow.  Orton can play.  Tebow would be lucky to become the second coming of Peyton Hillis.

Dear Denver,

Read this story. Then trade Tim Tebow instead.

You're welcome.

Report: Kyle Orton on trading block already

I'm pretty sick of people dumping on Orton for the Broncos personnel problems (namely, the lack of talent around him).  I picked up Orton on the waiver wire in my league last year, and he was in the top 5 in fantasy points all the way to about Week 14.  What that tells me is that he was not the problem.  He was getting yards, scoring when he could, and without a run game, shouldered most of the offensive load for the team.

Instead of blaming Orton for the Broncos lack of wins, blame Moreno, or the O line (other than Clady, of course).  I understand trading Kyle to see what Tebow can do.  But I won't be surprised when the wins don't come next year either.  This is a result of years of draft picks not panning out.  Kyle Orton is a top 15 QB whether you want to admit it or not.  Tebow won't be for at least 2 seasons as a full-time starter.

If Kyle gets picked up by a team with more offensive pieces, he can definitely lead a team to the playoffs.  I'm not going to throw Tim Tebow under the bus for making Orton a cap casualty, but I am sorry he never got the full support of the Denver fans.

Look what happened to Rich Gannon when he finally figured it out.  I won't be the one eating crow if Orton has another statistically strong season, but I can name several people on sports radio in Denver that probably will.  Good luck to Orton, and don't listen to the haters.  He may not have the best arm, but he is a good decision-maker and can make nearly all the throws.  And let's face it, he's a step up at QB for over half the league almost immediately.

Orton would be an upgrade for about 10 NFL teams

If the Broncos play their cards right, they should be able to get at least a second-round pick for Orton.

Dear Arizona,

Read this story. Then go get Kyle Orton.

Sincerely, Cardinals fans.

Kolb is on the way. The trade is imminent. Orton to Minny, Miami or maybe even SF.

I take that you know nothing about the Chicago Bears??  Orton was here and ran the same sysytem that Fox will run in Denver except the Bears had a Defense when Orton started his rookie years(10-4Record). Make the smart throws keep the ball safe. Denver has no chance next year they have and will not have a Defense untill they get players on that side of the ball.  I truly don't see Tebow as abetter quarterback than Orton, Orton showed that he can make all the throws while Tebow couldn't he will go down as bust.

Trading Orton is bad idea. Not a flashy QB but is pretty steady and the guy manages to win. Any team that gets him could do worse.

Let's be realistic here....

Yes, Tebow totaled 11 TD's last year. Yes, Tebow had 3 starts last year.

Tebow did not, however, total 11 TD's during those 3 starts, so the 'nearly 4 TD's a game' comment doesn't really hold water.
