Cowboys to cut Williams, Colombo, Barber, Davis

Yesterday, the Baltimore Ravens drew a ton of attention by slashing prices cutting a slew of veterans including Derrick Mason and Todd Heap. Tuesday, it was the Cowboys turn, as reports started flying that Dallas had cut wide receiver Roy Wiliams, offensive linemen Marc Colombo and Leonard Davis, kicker Kris Brown and running back Marion Barber.

None of the cuts were that surprising, particularly Barber and Williams, who seemed like likely targets to be cut when colleague Ryan Wilson wrote about the very subject just a few weeks ago.

Williams (who, by the way, just got some bling back after the most notorious mailed-wedding-ring incident of the entire offseason) makes sense as a roster expense, particularly because now the Cowboys will simply start Miles Austin and Dez Bryant, both of whom are better than Williams anyway.

Cowboys Offseason
And Barber's become the least effective back in Dallas' stable; even though Barber had more carries than Tashard Choice last season (113 to 66), he still on managed a feeble 3.3 yards per carry and an unimpressive 28.8 yards per game. Additionally, he found the end zone just four times.

The combination of just Barber and Williams will save the Cowboys nearly $10 million in terms of salary cap number, and it's become pretty clear -- based on all these cuts -- that they are in fact players in the Nnamdi Asomugha market this offseason.

Whether or not they land the coveted cornerback, though, they've probably made a slew of good roster decisions anyway.

Cutting players and slashing prices. This is all well and good but when will the Cowboys understand that they have one problem and one problem only ... Phony Homo. This dude makes bad decisions at bad times in crucial games. Am I the only one who recognizes the Cowgirls need fort a real quarterback rather than a big-stage bust who is better at golf than his chosen profession?

My understanding is.... if you cut him now, the 2011 portion is disregarded but you still have to count any remaining signing bonus against your 2011 cap.

Well since the deal he signed with the Cowboys had $26 million guarenteed, I don't think he is hurting for funds yet....  Wouldn't be shocked if they brought him back for less money

It's no big surprise that the Cowboys cut Roy Williams and Marion Barber. Williams has never been effective as a Cowboys receiver, and he was prone to making mistakes at very inopportune times. He lost two games last year with fumbles, one against the Redskins and one against the Saints, both games the Cowboys should have won.

It's sad to see Barber go. He was a hard worker and a good teammate, but he just lost his effectiveness as a RB. Marc Colombo was always banged up and didn't have it anymore, and Leonard Davis was OK in the first year of his time with the Boys, but after that, he was prone to penalties and mistakes.

Kris Brown...what did he do last year, suit up for one game? and he didn't play...like a kicker being cut would be important.

Dallas cutting the dead weight....big deal!  You still have Romo as your starting quaterback....and to me that spells no championship.

Is it true that if you cut a player right now there are no cap penalties even if there is dead money?  I keep hearing this on various internet message boards, yet no one seems to have a media source that I trust enough to believe it.

Anyone have a link, or information on this?
