Hasselbeck to sign three-year deal with Titans

HasselbeckPosted by Josh Katzowitz

Free agent QB Matt Hasselbeck has a new home, and new Titans coach Mike Munchak has a new signal-caller.

Per CBSSports.com’s Mike Freeman, the 35-year-old Hasselbeck will sign a multi-year deal with the Titans worth a reported $21 million over three years. That means the SeahawksHasselbeck’s former employer who signed Tarvaris Jackson on Tuesday – are officially done with him, and that means Vince Young is out in Tennessee.

It’s also tremendous news for rookie QB Jake Locker. With the retirement of Kerry Collins, Locker was looking at starting in Tennessee with no veteran leadership around him to let him learn.

Now, Hasselbeck probably will take the first-team snaps while Locker gets to learn what it’s like to be an NFL quarterback.

Hasselbeck's new destination
Hasselbeck also will be a good team guy, considering he helped lead the offseason Seahawks workouts, despite knowing there was a good chance he wouldn’t be back in Seattle.

In fact, Freeman thinks Tennessee made such a good move that the Titans are heading for the playoffs. While that’s still going to be a tough bet with the Colts still in the AFC South, it’s an interesting thought. Chances are, unlike last year when Hasselbeck led the 7-9 Seahawks to the postseason, Tennessee actually will have to own a winning record to make the playoffs.

Now, the next step for Tennessee: making sure RB Chris Johnson doesn’t hold out in hopes of getting more money from the Titans.

Hasselbeck to sign three-year deal with Titans

I don't understand why any team would want Hasselseucks. Besides being injured most of the time in the last  few seasons, he is not a qb you can depend on to lead your team the entire season. Anyone who thinks he is going to be an asset to a team hasn't been following him or Seahawks football much. Lets face it, if Seattle doesn't think he is worth as their starter why would any team thinks he can be theirs? He might be a great team player but as for leading the team to the promise land, don't hold your breath.

Hasselbeck will get hurt and Locker will be playing.... mark my word.

Hasselbeck has been great in Seattle but he has been showing up out of shape, flabby and soft when training camp has started the last couple years. Not sure if it's because his back hurts and limits his off season training but either way, it's been noticeable.

The Titans will have to be one of the best O lines in the league to keep Matt healthy cuz he's NOT mobile... at all.

If they can protect him, he still can be great, IMO.     &

Hasselbeck to sign three-year deal with Titans

Why did Seattle let him go????
Lets start with this contract 3 years 21 mil. Seattle was not willing to pay that kind of money to a 35 year old injury prone QB who's performance has been on the decline the last couple of years. Not saying Charlie Manson who Taverius Jackson are the answer in Seattle but what Hasselcrack was asking for and apperently received in Tennessee is way too much. Note Seattle has about 39mil in cap space and can make more room if they want so money was not the issue here. I'm glad you are excited about the signing but its not all that its being made out to be and I hope he doesn't throw his back out again when he had a clear path to the end zone and went in untouched. Oh ya he has disc issues in his back as well. We love what he did in Seattle but his time has passed and it was time for Seattle to move on. Enjoy our retread.

Vince Young was out of Tennessee even before they drafted Locker. Everyone associated with the organization knew this, as did the local sports media. So did Vince, as well as his agent.

I dont think this will be a good fit for the Titans or Hasselbeck. This team isnt going to contend for the playoffs this year and I believe it will slow down the development of Jake Locker. Im not saying Locker should be starting right away but I was hoping he would be playing by week 10 so a stopgap veteran would have made more sense not a guy thats gonna want to start for 2-3 more years.

Really, Matt Hasselbeck signs with the Titans for three years? I wonder how much of that is guaranteed money. I'd kind of like to know who Matt's going to throw the ball to, other than tight end Bo Scaffe. I don't think Kenny Britt is going to be on the team for several weeks, as I am sure Commissioner Gooddell is going to suspend him for some time. I guess if Ntae Washington isn't injured there is hope. The Titans were 27th in offense last year. They need a lot of help to make the playoffs.

Interesting the Seahawks picked up Tavaris Jackson as a free agent...why? What can he do? Agree with an earlier poster that he doesn't have the arm and he didn't do much for the Vikings. I can't believe the Seahawks are going to turn over the QB duties to Charlie Whitehurst.

Good article. Hasselback still has some good years left,  but the Titans are in rebuilding phase, so he is probably there to mentor the rook.

Another really good article about similar issues:

Instead of hoping he doesn't hold out, pay the man.  How can you think it's right to pay Chris Johnson $550k on the year?  If they don't pay him now, when his rookie deal expires in a year from now, if he's smart, he leaves the Titans and refuses to negotiate with them at all.  Just hold out until the last 4 weeks of the season or whatever the required time period is, and finish out your contract and leave.

That man IS the Titans offense.

That beats having a good season and then QUITTING in the playoffs.  Right, Bears fan?  The guy did well considering his O-Line and lack of receivers.
