The past few months, we’ve paid quite a bit of attention to QB Carson Palmer and whether Bengals owner Mike Brown would trade him and get something of value for his estranged QB or if he’d let him retire.

Now that Brown has said he’d rather let Palmer rot in California than trade him (he said it a little nicer than that), the Bengals had to turn their attention to finding another veteran QB who can compete with rookie Andy Dalton for the starting spot.

As Rapid Reporter Paul Dehner writes, Cincinnati has agreed to terms on a two-year deal with former Raiders QB Bruce Gradkowski.

The move makes sense on a couple different levels.

1) When Gradkowski played in Tampa Bay, he worked with Jay Gruden, who’s now in charge of the Bengals offense. Their familiarity with each other certainly will help Gradkowski, particularly since Dalton hasn’t gotten any practice time in Gruden’s offense.

2) Gradkowski is a legit starting quarterback, compiling a 6-14 record in 20 starts (a third of those wins came against the Bengals!). Yes, that record is not impressive, but he’s the kind of guy that can provide some veteran leadership to help a young quarterback (you saw that a little bit last year in Oakland with Jason Campbell).

Either way, Gradkowski was so excited, he tweeted the following: “Bengal fans let’s get ready to rock and roll! Can’t wait for this great opportunity!”

He talks about honoring commitment, yet his lack of commitment to Cincinnati, Bengal fans, Bengal players and to the NFL has made itself blatantly apparent for the last 20 yrs. He's a joke. I hope somehow, someway, this thread finds him. He needs to know that his leadership (poor leadership) has ruined Cincinnati pro football for all its fans. He's nothing more than an idiotic, undeserving, unqualified rich kid trapped in an old, crusty-assed man's body. One beautiful day, when that useless piece of ball sack leaves this world, I hope his pops is there to greet him. With belt in hand, he'll beat Mike's spoiled ass to hell where it belongs. Mike Brown is THE worst owner in all sports. I would trade him and a 2nd rounder for Al Davis all day, at least he wants to win

First of all, if Carson Palmer wanted to file an anti-trust suit against the Bengals, he would have to do it on his own dime. He is already independently wealthy and will probably be a billionaire by the time he is 60. He is not going to do it, But if he did want to do it, he would have to wait some period of time to see what the Bengals did. If he refused to take a pay cut to make a trade possible, then it would be on him. The issue of market value. On the other hand, if the current CBA makes him a free agent after a year, then he almost certainly would have no grounds for action. At best, he might get some limited compensation for the failure of the Bengals to follow the normal practices within the business. I brough this up not because I think it is going to happen, but because people are not cognizant enough of the existence of anti-trust laws and their possible applications. Many people suffer in their daily lives and their pursuit of their careers because of anti-trust law violations. Own a PC? Sometimes annoyed by the price of software and new operating systems? Ever heard of vertical integration: underlying operating system-graphical user interface-application. If you as a software house with an overwhelming market share intermingle these elements so that others cannot enter the market, you are violating anti-trust law, in my opinion. Maybe there's a reason why software costs so much. As far as I am concerned, the whole market for talent of all kinds -- athletic, artistic, literary, intellectual, media -- is an anti-trust swamp. And people are affected. Knew a guy once who did video production. The local cable company produced commercials for the businesses at an artifically low price and made it up on the advertising rates, so that independents could not get into the market. Clearly an anti-trust violation. But how do you do anything about it?
