Steve Breaston headed to Chiefs on five-year deal

Wednesday was another day of bananas free agent rumors, signings and general insanity (reminder: follow everything in our updating Free Agency Experience and with our 2011 NFL Free Agency Tracker!), but there was a really fun little run on wide receivers late in the evening when Seattle went out and got themselves a downfield threat in Sidney Rice and Kansas City stepped out and grabbed a very good No. 2 in now-ex-Cardinal Steve Breaston.

Breaston, according to Sports Illustrated's Jim Trotter, is reuniting with old offensive coordinator Todd Haley with the Chiefs, and doing so with a five-year deal that guarantees him $9.5 million.

The last time Breaston and Haley were working together, 2008, the wideout piled up 1,006 yards and caught three touchdowns. (Since then, he's totaled 1,430 yards and four touchdowns in two seasons.)

Breaston's addition to the Chiefs roster gives them a non-rookie option (Jonathan Baldwin is there as well) to line up across from Dwayne Bowe, and should help equate to pretty strong offensive firepower from the defending AFC West champions.

Just for comparison's sake, Breaston's pretty good value too, when you consider that Rice netted $18.5 million guaranteed from Seattle, and the Jets coughed up $24 million guaranteed over five years for Santonio Holmes.

Great snag for KC!  $9.5 mil guarantee is a steal given this years market as well.

I love this move.  Instead of shelling out tons of cash for WR's like Holmes and rice the Chiefs got themselves a guy that is very familiar with the offense.  He's a vertical threat, can move the chains.  With Bowe, Breaston, Baldwin, Charles, Moaeki, and even Dexter how are teams going to defend the Chiefs?  That's some serious speed and weapons you have there.  Young too.  I wonder without Weis how creative KC is going to get because what to do with Dex?  Return game?  Wildcat maybe sometimes?  Back up RB?  Number 4 WR?  If the Chiefs add a legit 3-4 NT with Smith and Powe as back up, add an OLB opposite Hali and grab a guy like Bushrod or Clabo seriously watch out.  There are question marks.  Can they handle physical Def lines like Oak and Balt etc?  Is there a capable back up to Cassel if he goes down?  What about Charles, they could use another back cuz Jones isn't an every down back anymore.  That being said, no denying the Chiefs are really being built the right way.

Look out for the Chiefs!  I for one am happy to see some of these traditionally bad teams coming up to be contenders.  Anyone looked at the Lions lately....scary stuff.

Steve Breaston headed to Chiefs on five-year deal

I'm happy for "Stevie B." that he's getting paid, but I'm kinda disappointed that he had to leave the Cardinals in order for that to happen. He must have been thinking about the QB situation in Arizona, and that must have played a part in his decision to play for the Chiefs. I know that this blog is about the Breaston and the Chiefs, but if the Cardinals don't do anything about their QB situation soon...the next one that will be leaving will be "Fitz".....Believe That!!!

Yeah the only move that makes sense to me as well. Sidney Rice's 5 year contract will be up by the time the Seahawks are competitive.

This has been the only move that has made any sense to me. Rice is waste in Seattle without a QB or RB. And Santonio Holmes is not worth that much.
