Report: Asomugha down to Jets, Cowboys

Asomugha

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

While the Texans grabbed Johnathan Joseph and the Steelers re-upped with Ike Taylor, knocking two of the three most-coveted free agent cornerbacks off the market, we’re still waiting to see where the most-expensive of them all, Nnamdi Asomugha, will sign.

The original thought(s) were the Texans, the Jets and the 49ers. Then, as Houston took on Joseph on Thursday night, it became the Jets, the 49ers (and maybe the Buccaneers, the Cowboys and the Raiders (!)). All were rumors, and supposedly, there was a chance it would be resolved late Thursday night or early Friday morning*.

*Luckily, this didn’t happen while the Eye on Football blog was catching a few hours of shut-eye.

Apparently, it’s now down to two teams. As NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reports, Asomugha will sign either with the Jets or the Cowboys, and some believe Dallas actually is the favorite.

This will be the first big competitive test for New York coach Rex Ryan and his brother, Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, since Ryan took over the Cowboys job. It adds a little bit of intrigue to a situation that continues to be one of the most interesting storylines of the new NFL season.

Who can afford to sign and pay a guy who will probably command at least $15 million a year?

Jets CB Darrelle Revis obviously would love to have the second-best CB in the league playing opposite of him, and Jets QB Mark Sanchez has intimated that he (and maybe some of his teammates) would be willing to restructure his contract in order to land a big free agent.

The Cowboys, while way over the salary cap limit at the beginning of the season, has been dumping big-salaried players since Tuesday in an effort to sign a high-impact player.

My guess: the Jets still have the upper-hand. But with Jerry Jones always looking to get what he wants, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Asomugha end up in Dallas.

I'm a huge jets fan and I think the jets will get him. They have the money and they're a better team. The Cowboys want to give away players to loosen the salary cap up. If you can't afford him you can't afford him. The Cowboys are making a fool out of themselves and the should've kept the players the gave away. They went to far in one step. If the jets sign him its gonna take a lot for the cowboys to make up for there mistake. The Cowboys need him and the jets want him. The jets are gonna offer more money than the cowboys because they have more money

Report: Asomugha down to Jets, Cowboys

I'm not a fan of either team so I'll give my opinion as a knowledgable football fan. First of all Aso and Revis together would be not only the best cornerback tandom now. It would be the best tandom ever to play the game together. I've listened and watched many analysis discuss each ones game. I have to admit at this point I would give a slight edge to Revis. Aso plays one side of the field and plays it great and is a great tackler. But Revis plays all over the field covering whoever the best player on the other team has. He plays against the other teams best Wrs and TEs no matter where they line up and then changes his game plan during the game to play against other players. Not to mention he is just as good a tackler as Aso. Both could tackle anyone bigger than them. Now if you look at the stats Aso wins. But remember that the Raiders have sucked for the past few years and every team throws the ball to run up the score giving Aso a chance to get interceptions. The Jets have just played in the last 2 AFC championship games and teams(especially last year) don't throw in the same direction as Revis. If you don't get opps how could you make interceptions. If both players did play together we could finally this answer without a doubt. Teams would be forced to throw the ball and then we could see who puts up bigger numbers with equal opps.
