Sadly, Harrison apologizes to Goodell

You remember what Steelers LB James Harrison told Men’s Journal, yes? Harrison now would like you to know that he's very, very sorry about that, telling reporters that his comments might have been just a bit out of line.

You’ll recall that he called commissioner Roger Goodell a “crook” and a “devil” (and ahem, a gay slur, "stupid," "puppet" and "dictator"), and he said other nasty assorted things about QB Ben Roethlisberger and RB Rashard Mendenhall.

But obviously this was the best line in the article regarding Goodell: "If that man was on fire and I had to piss to put him out, I wouldn't do it. I hate him and will never respect him."

So, obviously, we couldn’t wait to hear what Harrison had to say when he first talked to reporters Friday during the opening of Steelers training camp. What other bodily functions would Harrison choose to use as metaphors when diiscussing Goodell?

Instead, Harrison went soft, saying, basically: um, hey guys, that's my bad.

"The interview that I did and the comments that I made about Roger Goodell were inappropriate, at the least," Harrison said, via ESPN.com. "They were way out of line, and I was speaking out of anger and frustration at the time. Any comments that I made that offended anyone, I apologize."

Despite talking trash about some of his teammates, he hasn’t apparently created any long-term problems. In fact, team president Art Rooney said any discipline directed at Harrison won’t go as far as a suspension from team activities.

"That's all behind us," Harrison said. "Those comments [toward teammates] were taken out of context with a long conversation. It's not anything I haven't talked to those guys about or my teammates about."

And though Harrison was apologetic, I wouldn’t expect the muzzle to stay on too long (the guy DID just debate the merits of taking a leak on the commissioner). Nor would we have that any other way.

Calm down there playtowhine. No need to get personal with the Jolly Roger. I'm sure the next time you bump into the Commish @ the league meetings, you'll let the expletives fly. That is, until Lord Goodell's goons haul your butt into the alley and piss on you.

It's unfortunate that Harrison was put in this position. Dealing with Goodell's incompetence and stupidity can drive anyone over the edge. He's just a guy with a big mouth. Keeping things in perspective, at least he was never convicted of consipiring to possess cocain with the intent to distribute, like a Running Back on a division rival was. A couple Steelers have been accused of wrongdoing, but never indicted, much less convicted. There is a team in their divison that had a convicted drug dealer on the roster and still has a player convicted of obstruction in a murder case on the roster. Comparitively Harrison is not so bad.

No one is buying this.  If, no when, Harrison comes before the commissioner this fall for one or more innapropriate, leaving his feet, helmet-to-helmet hits, I hope the commish tees him up and knocks it 300 yards, so to speak.  At some point, just suspend this idiot for a season.  8 games for the hit, and another 8 for misguided pissing comment.  Then, in a year, let's see if James is willing to run his mouth again.  And BTW, the image above of Harrison with two hand guns says it all.  To Hell with league image.  I'll bet this guy is a wife-beating piece of work off the field.

Sadly, the dude doesn't know when to STFU. Today he is quotes saying, "I should have used better vocabulary!" LOL better vocabulary, taken out of context, its all behind us,.....what a wimp. Good football player no denying that but has a rotted turnip for a brain. What was his excuse for playing so poorly in the Super Bowl? Bad coaching??

@LSUSMC: 1st, do I know you from another site? If I felt he was sincere in his apology, I would be right with you. Alas, I think it's a just an apology of convenience. I mean, the least he could have done was offer to contribute $25K from a list of charities the NFL would give him.
