As we've said elsewhere, the only rumors we really heard throughout the day Friday were that the Jets and Cowboys were in a dogfight for landing Nnamdi Asomugha. Then, of course, the Eagles swooped in and stole the best player on the market.

But were the Cowboys about to pull it off? According to Jerry Jones, via our Cowboys Rapid Reporter Nick Eatman, they were "close."

"We had an opportunity," Jones said. "We acted on it and, believe me, we firmly acted on it -- until my eyes watered."

Jones was also asked about pulling defensive coordinator Rob Ryan away from drills in order to hop on the phone with a then-unknown person on the other end. Turns out, it was indeed Nnamdi.

"I [wouldn't have gotten] Rob to break from a drill to come over unless it was serious business," Jones said.

To me, Jerry's comments about his eyes watering are kind of fascinating. Was five years, $60 million too much for the Cowboys to pay? And the Jets? Because that would be surprising -- $12 million a year seems relatively cheap considering that a) Darrelle Revis averages $11.5 million a year and b) the type of booming market we've seen for free agents this offseason.

Or perhaps Jones simply means he got upset when he was told that the Cowboys were out of the running for Nnamdi's services. If that's the case, then maybe Nnamdi did leave money on the table for what he felt was his best shot to win.

If it's the former, though, it means that while Nnamdi was easily the best cornerback on the market, he clearly wasn't ever worth the reported $19 million that was being thrown out, and that both the Cowboys and Jets didn't believe he was worth paying more than Revis.

They're even worse than that here in Dallas!  I've never seen any fanbase as fairweather and bandwagoner as Cowboys fans....sheesh...Dallas fans in general.

When are you going to stop with this nonsense Antz? You either don't live in Dallas at all or you run with a very limited and strange crowd. Cowboys fans are far from being fairweather and it's been proven time and time again over the decades. It's incredible that you can even still say that with a straight face after the dry spell they've been facing since the Aikman era.

Say what you want about the caliber player that TNew is right now, but when that contract was signed he was as much of a shut down corner as there was out there, so your comment makes little to no sense!! The Boys paid him because in 2008 after making the Pro Bowl TNew's contract was up, nobody could have predicted the slide that has occurred in the last 3 years... Typical Cowboy's hater!! If your going to cut on us Boys fan's you have to look no further than our GM, who knows about half as much as every other GM in the league. He needs to step back and take into consideration that the only time the Boys were good in his tenure as the owner is when Jimmy Johnson was drafting and making all the decisions and when Parcells was doing the same... Once the team gets good Jerruh swoops in and tries to put his stamp on it, unfortunately when he does that it ruins the team. Jerry, please just be an owner and let the football decisions go to the football minds!!

What are you talking about?  That's like over 70% of Cowboys fans.  They're even worse than that here in Dallas!  I've never seen any fanbase as fairweather and bandwagoner as Cowboys fans....sheesh...Dallas fans in general.  The Mavericks finally win a championship and everyone's a Mavs fan now...pathetic!

As a Cowboys fan I want to see them sign a safety today.  So far I have waited in anticipation every day to see a decent free agent signed and now we have signed Marcus Spears from last years pourous defensive line; and Kenyon Coleman?  Are you serious?  Then to go after Nnamdi and lose instead of just making sure you actually sign a safety this year?  Safety has been a big problem since Darren Woodson left...I think that was around 2002.  Better do something soon to make this team competitive because it isn't as it stands right now.  This lifelong Cowboys fan from New York is going to be wearing Jet green soon if they don't start making better decisions.
