Lewis: A.J. Green 'an upgrade' over Ochocinco, TO

A.J. Green is, without question, a very talented football player. But is he going to make an immediate impact? And is he an upgrade over Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens already?

According to Marvin Lewis, yes, yes he is.

"He showed his physical prowess out there today," Lewis said, per Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. "He's an upgrade … we're improved athletically."

That's a pretty bold statement because, for all of their shenanigans, Ocho and Owens are pretty talented receivers.

And it probably needs to be taken with a grain of salt since it's coming from one of the guys who helped make the decision not to retain the pair.

But it also warrants mentioning that Hobson, who covers the Bengals for thet team, was pretty impressed as well.

"[Lewis] is like everyone else down here at camp raving about No. 1 pick A.J. Green," Hobson writes. "He catches everything, no one's covered him, and when he is, he jumps up and takes it away."

And, just to had fuel to the fire is safety Chris Crocker, who was the victim on one of Green's catches, when, according to Hobson, Green "launched himself over [Crocker] to make one of those "wow" catches where you can hear him snap the ball like some amphibian at the top of his jump."

"He's in the upper echelon right now, I'd say," said Crocker.

So, yeah, lots of bold praise for the rookie early in camp. There's a good chance he lives up to said praise. And, without question, he has the talent to become a great wide receiver. The only issue is that -- for now -- he's going to be catching balls from either Andy Dalton or Bruce Gradkowski.

Even Ocho and Owens didn't have to overcome that last year.

That's good to hear about Green "doin' his thing" for the Bengals during practice. I liked his play while he was at UGA and even before that when he was in the All-Star Game while in high school(Under Armour,US Army). If the QB situation goes along well in Cincy,he's going to be the one to watch as for AFC ROY Award.....Trust Me! As for the TO and OchoCinco comparison......I'm not going to get started about that because it's just a waste of time! Just keep "doin your thing" AJ and hopefully it will transfer to the field once the season starts and when it really matters baby!SmileMoney mouthCool

I appreciate Marvin Lewis' exuberance over his new receiver.  Lewis should hold off on saying how wonderful Green is before playing a single game.  Lewis should make sure Green does not become an ego monster.  Johnson did not start off as Ochocinco.  His ego got out of line with success on the field. How Green will handle success or in the most likely case failure?  As Johnson got older he did not take to losing very well.  Marvin may be better served not showering adulation on Green until certain of Green's capacity to not let it go to his head.

Guitar Pico - thanks for the Kudos(twice)...nice to know someone occasionally sees value in what you post. The thought of A.J. Green catching balls from the likes of Andy Dalton or Bruce Gradkowski, makes me squirm a bit. I still think Green will be a solid receiver, but it may take a bit longer than training camp.

First of all, why does everybody complain because a coach is praising a player? I remember when arizona was doing the same thing for Fitzgerald, and now everybody is saying he is the best receiver. Honestly, is everybody commenting in Georgetown, KY watching these guys play? Are all of you expert scouts and evaluators? No...so just because a veteran coach knows something when he sees it doesn't make it false. The jury is still out on Green just because he hasn't caught a pass in the regular season, but Lewis has been coaching Chad his entire career for the most part and noticed that Green is performing better than what Chad did recently. Quit reading so much into everything and quit complaining because somebody praises somebody else that you know nothing about.
