Rex Ryan challenges rest of league to beat Pats

It's officially football season but it doesn't quite feel like it until Jets head coach Rex Ryan says something for the sole purpose of getting a rise out of people. (Also acceptable: proclaiming that it's snack time. Requisite naughty language alert on the video evidence.)

Well, now it feels like football season because -- you guessed it -- Ryan had some thoughts on AFC East rival New England. Relatively speaking, the comments were innocuous enough (not even Rodney Harrison would be able to twist Ryan's words into motivational fodder … we think), but media and fans have a knack for blowing things out of proportion. We suspect this will be no different.

When asked by reporters Monday if the Jets are the favorite to win the division, Ryan spoke frankly.

"In my mind. I don’t know about everybody else’s. The first year I got in we were supposed to win six games or five games or four games. I don’t know what the experts say, I just know what I believe in my heart and that’s that this is going to be our year. Again, I think we have to find somebody out there to beat New England besides us, and I think that would help. Anybody out there that wants to sign up for it? Are you good enough as a team to beat the New England Patriots. Forget about us, are you good enough to go out and beat the New England Patriots? I’m challenging the league."

Like we said, hardly inflammatory stuff. But Boston's WEEI labeled it an "ultimatum," and the Boston Herald called it a "new approach to tweaking the Patriots."

But fret not. Ryan did have some (sorta) laudatory words for new Pats' receiver Chad Ochocinco.

"I’ve always said this, when it was Chad Johnson, we could never stop him, but when it was Chad Ochocinco, I’ve been more successful. So I hope he doesn’t change his name back. I have a great deal of respect for him. He’s a tremendous player. I mean an absolute tremendous player, going along with [Tom] Brady and the guys, [Wes] Welker and all those guys. I’m glad we have the corners we have."

See? It could've been much worse, right?

Rex Ryan challenges rest of league to beat Pats

I think the Steelers have a real problem playing the Patriots. They've played them...11 times...I think...since 2001. 2 wins in all of those meetings.

opinions are a cheap commodity.  everyone has one.  now for rex to make this statement, it shows how worried he is of the patriots and their recent transactions to aquire ocho and fat albert.  the jets should worry about what they can do instead of what others can do for them.  it's a chicken sh*t way to try to win their division.  patriots are worried about what they can do and not what others can do for them.  their are a lot of haters out there, but i guarantee you this, you would love to have an owner like kraft, a coach like belicheck and players that puts the importance of team before themselves.  all the opinions posted here about the patriots of this or that means one thing; jealousy breeds envy.  their will always be one champion at the end of the season and the patriots are only concerned about winning.  not who can beat their division opponents.  rex ryan needs to focus on how to improve the jets and not who can help the jets beat the patriots.  all you haters can say whatever you want, but belicheck has gotten his team younger and better in the last couple of years and also has more picks in the draft then other teams every year.   good thing football is back.  go patriots!!!

Here's my list of teams that don't have a problem playing the Pats-
New Orleans (of course)
Pittsburg (old school)
Baltimore (see above)
Philadelphia (those new acquasitions)
Green Bay (Saints clones)  Cloned our offense, so we're cloning their defense.
Jets (might lose, but they'll go down fighting)
Atlanta-NOT (HaHa, ya'll really thought I'd pick you guys, you suck.)  There, that aughta get a couple more NFC southers in here.
(So many AFC'rs stinking up the place...lol)

Yeah, well times have changed.  Finally have players to back it up...and did you check out our draft.  Thanks Patriots for Ingram.  If somebody up top would have needed a running back, he would have gone in the top 5, like most running backs that are #1 on the board.  Got him in the late 20's, that's a steal.  He's definitely worth losing the extra second rounder to you guys.  That covers our running issues.  Got Cameron Jordan way lower than he should have gone.  Yep, another fine Payton/Loomis draft and we'll keep talking smack.  I sure do remember the days of the Patriots when they sucked, too.  It's all about the QB.  Look at the Colts, before Peyton the were routinely called the "Dolts" because they sucked....And you Patriots weren't that great before Brady, simple as that.  We have as good a QB as anyone, and I, finally, get to talk a little smack (not that I didn't do it before, anyway, lol).

Rex Ryan challenges rest of league to beat Pats

In the interest of saying something intelligent..

I'm not 100% sure why this is news. I mean, he joked around with Chad Ochocinco's last name, and challenged the league to beat New England. Not like he guaranteed a Super Bowl win or anything...

Oh, whoops.
