Rex Ryan challenges rest of league to beat Pats

It's officially football season but it doesn't quite feel like it until Jets head coach Rex Ryan says something for the sole purpose of getting a rise out of people. (Also acceptable: proclaiming that it's snack time. Requisite naughty language alert on the video evidence.)

Well, now it feels like football season because -- you guessed it -- Ryan had some thoughts on AFC East rival New England. Relatively speaking, the comments were innocuous enough (not even Rodney Harrison would be able to twist Ryan's words into motivational fodder … we think), but media and fans have a knack for blowing things out of proportion. We suspect this will be no different.

When asked by reporters Monday if the Jets are the favorite to win the division, Ryan spoke frankly.

"In my mind. I don’t know about everybody else’s. The first year I got in we were supposed to win six games or five games or four games. I don’t know what the experts say, I just know what I believe in my heart and that’s that this is going to be our year. Again, I think we have to find somebody out there to beat New England besides us, and I think that would help. Anybody out there that wants to sign up for it? Are you good enough as a team to beat the New England Patriots. Forget about us, are you good enough to go out and beat the New England Patriots? I’m challenging the league."

Like we said, hardly inflammatory stuff. But Boston's WEEI labeled it an "ultimatum," and the Boston Herald called it a "new approach to tweaking the Patriots."

But fret not. Ryan did have some (sorta) laudatory words for new Pats' receiver Chad Ochocinco.

"I’ve always said this, when it was Chad Johnson, we could never stop him, but when it was Chad Ochocinco, I’ve been more successful. So I hope he doesn’t change his name back. I have a great deal of respect for him. He’s a tremendous player. I mean an absolute tremendous player, going along with [Tom] Brady and the guys, [Wes] Welker and all those guys. I’m glad we have the corners we have."

See? It could've been much worse, right?

Rex Ryan is challenging the league to beat the Patriots...because he could not do it when it mattered most.
WHAT???  And you are a football fan?  Jets beat the Patriots in Foxboro last year in the playoffs.  It was
on TV - you must have missed it?

Get off these boards -  idiot!
Night night time for you, little wee one

Shoot, wish we were in the AFC east instead of the rugged NFC south (Carolina being the exception, of course).  Don't say anything Carolina, you know it's true.

Rex Ryan challenges rest of league to beat Pats

Well, the last time the Saints played the Patriots, we all know what happened.  Tom Brady quit in the second half.  Y'know, I read an article really recent that said that Brady was not a quitter.  The whole article was about not quitting and all I can picture is Brady standing on the sidelines of that Monday Night game two years ago, healthy, and not playing, and it was pretty early in the fourth or late in the third when he quit.

The reason I bring this up is because of Rex's calling out of the league.  We don't play them often but we definitely can beat em.  The only problem for Rex, when we play the Patriots and beat them, is that we probably are playing the whole AFC east, and then we have to put the "smackdown" on the Jets, also.  Like we did two years ago, the last time we played these goons (word's got a nice ring to it).

So, to paraphrase, Rex wants other teams to beat Patriots.  The problem with that theory, as to how to get ahead in the AFC east, is, first; don't rely on other teams to do your work for you, and, also, chances are, that team that beats the Patriots is probably going to play the Jets, also.  Chances are, the Jets lose to that team, like they did to the Saints two years ago.

Not really a good plan to get to the SB, but it should get a few fans riled.  Not me though, that butt-whipping we put on both of you two years ago still brings pleasant vibes when I think about it.

So, who else thinks their team can not only beat, but actually man-handle, the Patriots.  Not saying what we did to them would happen every time but who else can really stand toe-to-toe with the "almighty" Patriots.

     Thoughts on your teams.

i hate the jets as much as anybody but lets be real, the jets are gonna have more then 7 wins.  on paper they're better in just about every category except QB.
Except the QB position is the most important.  Lets not forget that the only AFC champ since the flukey year the Raiders went to the SB are the Colts, Steelers, and Pats.  Thats 3 teams with a better QB than the Jets.  The Steelers aren't as dependent on QB play as the others, but lets be real, as bad as Big Ben can be, he is still better than Sanchez, especially in clutch situations.

How about someone Beats the Packers, the defending champs. or the Steelers who have won 2 superbowls since the Pats last SB win. Steelers got run last year like the Pats got run 4 years ago. Pats are not the top of the heap right now by a long shot REX. Neither are the JETS.

Jets fan weighing in here....All you Patriots lovers....this league is about what have you done LATELY...and LATELY, they Jets have taken out the Patriots in the playoffs. The Jets can hang with the Patriots, Ryan is asking the league WHO ELSE can give it to them. Ryan is one of the best coaches in the league (as is Belichik), his players go to war for him....let the man run his mouth, it's fun for the league.
