LaMarr Woodley signs 6-year, $61.5 million deal

The Steelers franchised linebacker LaMarr Woodely prior to the lockout. Friday morning he tweeted this: "Wanted u 2 hear it here 1st- drafted here... super bowl here.. will retire here!! time 2 get u #7!! @STEELERS 4 LIFE!!"

Translation: the Steelers signed Woodley to a six-year, $61.5 million deal. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the contract "includes a $22.5 million bonus and will significantly reduce his previous salary cap number. He was to be on the books for about $10 million in 2010 because of the franchise tag the Steelers applied to him. His new salary cap number could be about half of that."

And a source tells PFT that Woodley will make $18.1 million in 2011, and $27 million over two years making him the second highest-paid player in team history behind quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. (By comparison, James Harrison signed a six-year, $51.7 million contract in 2009.)

Since the lockout ended, Pittsburgh hasn't been as aggressive in free agency as their cross-state counterparts, Philadelphia, but they have been busy rejiggering their roster. They cut Max Starks, Antwaan Randle El and Flozell Adams, and re-signed cornerback Ike Taylor and now Woodley, two key cogs in the league's best defense a year ago.

A former 2007 second-round pick out of Michigan, Woodley has 39 sacks in his NFL career, including 10 in 2010. The Steelers first-round selection in 2007, inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons, is now on the short list of players next in line for a new deal.

One final thought on the Woodley news: Joe Flacco must be psyched.

LaMarr Woodley signs 6-year, $61.5 million deal

I still feel like we're missing something though... I can't figure out what, but I feel like we're missing something in the defensive backfield, and along the offensive line
I feel the same way..We are missing another decent cover corner. Mcfandden was burned left and right, Lewis and Butler have to many question marks and the rookies are unproven. I think it is a no brainer the Steelers use the cap room to go and get somebody. With Plax and Mason going to the Jets, possibly Malcom Floyd (of not already) to the Ravens, Chad Johnson to the Patriots we need to be beef up our back field.

Also with our first four games we have to be able to defend the pass better. It is hard to say but the Ravens will throw the ball better, Seattle is a passing team that might be force but the two that really scare me are the Colts and Texans. The Steelers have to know just like everybody else is that our back field has a hard time against the better passing QB's. Flacco, Manning and Schaub can and will tear us apart if the rush doesnt get there.

In my opinion our corners cannot hold the line long enough for our LB's and DL to get coverage sacks. Rogers should have had well over 400 yards passing (5 drops) He sat back there surveying the field, we cannot forget that and come back with the same back field and expect different results against the better passing teams. That is insanity.

GO STEELERS!

No thanks on Polamalu, he's about at the end. Might not be enough loot left for both Wallace and Timmons.
That's a good point, but it wouldn't feel right to me unless Troy retired when his current contract ends. I just couldn't picture him in another uniform.

This is great news, and I applaud Woodley for settling this deal and helping get below the cap.  I still feel like we're missing something though... I can't figure out what, but I feel like we're missing something in the defensive backfield, and along the offensive line (would've been psyched if Pouncey would've fallen to us).  I think I may just be getting caught up in this Free-Agent frenzy...

My man Woodley!! Still to this day I was excited when the Steel City drafted you! Glad you're staying pal.

Next on the agenda has to be extending Mike Wallace, Lawrence Timmons and Troy Polamalu.

LaMarr Woodley signs 6-year, $61.5 million deal

This is fantastic news. I am extremely happy the Steelers and Woodley worked out a deal before the season began. This guy is one of the best young pass rushers in the game, so keeping him in a Steeler jersey was an absolute must. Next on the agenda has to be extending Mike Wallace, Lawrence Timmons and Troy Polamalu.<br />
