Tebow on starting job: 'it was grabbed back away'

After an offseason filled with promise, the reality of what it means to be an NFL quarterback has slapped Tim Tebow across the face. It wasn't long ago that Tebow was thought to be the Broncos' future. Kyle Orton was on the trading block, the team's 2010 first-round pick would assume his role under center and get Denver back to winning and the playoffs, all would be right with the world.

Except a deal to send Orton to the Dolphins fell through, Orton promptly outplayed Tebow in practice, and then Merril Hoge took to Twitter to announce (with many, many exclamation points), among other things, that "It's embarrassing to think the Broncos could win with Tebow!!"

Tebow responded to Hoge via Twitter with a "'preciate that," and even LeBron James came to his defense.

On Thursday, Tebow, speaking with the Denver Post's Woody Paige, sounded, well, frustrated with the recent turn of events (and understandably so).

"My dream, since I was a young boy, of being a starting quarterback in the NFL seemed to be coming true," Tebow told Paige. "Then, I felt like it was grabbed back away. . . ."

Tebow, we think, is referring to the trade-that-didn't-materialize that would've shipped Orton out of town. While new head coach John Fox has publicly stated that the job is Orton's, the word on the street is that he will be under center when the Broncos begin the season.

As for the media criticism, Tebow, like Chad Henne in Miami, has had trouble ignoring it.

"I'm trying to insulate myself from what people in the media are saying, but I've seen some of it, and it hurts because it's coming from people who haven't seen me practice, haven't seen me play, haven't seen what I can do," he said, according to Paige. "I did an interview the other day with someone on the NFL Network who said last year I'd never play a down in the NFL. He was wrong.

"Others who say I won't make it are wrong. They don't know what I'm capable of and what's inside me. My family and my friends have been bothered by what's gone on, and I tell them to pay no attention to it. I'm relying as always on my faith."

As we mentioned on Friday's Eye on Football Podcast, we think most people would agree that Orton gives the Broncos the best chance to win now, although Tebow could one day be an NFL starting QB. It's just that the day hasn't arrived yet. So while Hoge's sentiments aren't particularly controversial, the way he delivered them clearly rubbed some people the wrong way, including Tebow.

So is that a problem? Or is public criticism part of the implicit deal professional athletes make when they sign lucrative contracts and play on national television every week?

Because, clearly, Tebow and Henne would disagree with that last paragraph.

Tebow on starting job: 'it was grabbed back away'

yo highoctane you jackass - I can see why your reputation is at 48 -

next time before you decide to type up a stupid message to bore us all & waste our time -  take that time to use google - if you had done that this time you would have found out

1) - its called the "bowery" - and it's a NY city neighborhhod - not a general place where the homeless live
2) - Merrill Hoge played in the NFL for 8 years - he was forced to retire because of a series of concussions which led to brain damage  - & before you make a feeble attempt at a brain damage joke - he had to relearn to read & write - & he's also a cancer survivor - go ahead & make a joke out of that too you uninformed idiot

so please  do us all a favor stay off the boards you dope !

Tebow on starting job: 'it was grabbed back away'

Speaking on NFL Network Wednesday afternoon, Michael Lombardi confirmed an ESPN report that Kyle Orton "will be the starter in Denver."NFL Network introduced the Lombardi segment by stating that Orton has already been told he's the starter. "He will not be traded," Lombardi emphasized, echoing Adam Schefter's report. The Broncos have done a 180 in one week, perhaps in an attempt to quell any negative feedback from the legion of Tebow supporters. Aug 3, 4:15 PM

Tebow on starting job: 'it was grabbed back away'

Public criticism is part of the deal for pro athletes... but being a jerk just to be a jerk is uncalled for. Hoge wasn't doing hard-hitting journalism predicting Tebow as a flop. He wasn't criticizing a player who was failing to perform on the field, even if Tebow hasn't exactly dazzled so far. He was taking shots because they'd get HIM in the news, as the story, with minimal downside - even if Tebow turns out as a great QB, it won't be this year and by the time it happens Hoge's comments will be old news.

Tebow on starting job: 'it was grabbed back away'

No offense to Tim Tebow because I think he has the talent and work ethic to be a solid NFL QB, but Kyle Orton is much better then Tebow at the moment.  If Fox and and the Broncos are smart, which it sounds like they are, Orton will be the starter.  Don't make the same mistake as Al Davis in 2009 when Jeff Garcia was slated to be the backup to Jamarcus Russell and should have been starting over him but Davis cut Garcia because he was too much of a threat to his franchise QB.  This is the NFL people. The best player should play not the future player that is making the $$$. You want to start in the NFL Tim Tebow then continue working and become a more accurate passer then Kyle Orton or the next QB they bring in to challenge you.

Tebow on starting job: 'it was grabbed back away'

This foot stomping, it's not fair crap is not what I would want to see from my starter. He's crying like his panties are giving him a wedgie.  What ever happend to beating someone out for the job...not taking over when they leave. Man up lil Timmy. Man up!

Tebow on starting job: 'it was grabbed back away'

So you don't think Tebow should have to earn the starting job? You think the coach should give it to him because the fans want it? Fox is not getting paid to listen to the fans or the media. I do agree that Orton is average, but average for a starter...better that most backups and certainly better than Tebow. The funny thing is the same fans and media that are ready to boycott, will be the first to turn on him when he sucks and blame Fox for playing him. I think Tebow is one of the good guys but clearly showed his panties with the whole " It's not fair" routine. Man up Tim! Play better than him=starting job

Tebow on starting job: 'it was grabbed back away'

Orton is an NFL QB.  Not the franchise, but he can manage the game and move the chains.  I'm glad it's Denver with this problem.

Tebow on starting job: 'it was grabbed back away'

If you are so capable, WIN THE JOB!
That's exactly right.  Tebow is correct though, the job was yanked away from him.  By Orton... who walked right back in the door, put all the trade talks immediately out of his mind, and simply took the job from Tebow by out-performing him.

Now, I'm not anti-Tebow.  I do think he's a 3-4 year project, and is probably a good year away from being ready to start still.  But in the NFL, you can never rely on getting a starting spot based upon draft position, reputation, contract, or trading away your competition.  If you want to start, you have to take the job from whomever has it, or fend off all challengers to keep it.  But again, I don't really fault Tebow for that.  It's a lesson that all new-ish NFL players have to learn at some point.  We have to remember that nearly every NFL player was the a star on their respective college teams, and was used to being a relatively unquestioned starter.  It can take some time to adjust to the mentality of being second or third string, and having to work your way back up.  I think it probably happens to a lot more players than we typically hear about in the news.

Tebow on starting job: 'it was grabbed back away'

Tim Tebow hasnt proved for one second that he deserves a starting job in the NFL. I feel like he's still trying to feed off his Gator days and complain his way to a starting job...sorry T-Bow, not in this league...He needs to sit tight and learn as much as possible. Eventually, if he shows the gumption, he'll be handed the keys to the Bronco...but for now just let Papa Orton drive...
