'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco are now Patriots. This is because, we're all told and we all believe, Bill Belichick is a genius, capable of controlling anyone that enters his locker room and turning a malcontent into a productive player.

But Dan Pompei, writing at the National Football Post, says the Patriots may have other ideas, and that he was told last week that "one or both" of the dynamic duo could be cut before the season begins.

"One NFL executive familiar with the Patriots ways told me he believes one or both of the big name acquisitions will be cut before the season starts," Pompei writes. "The front office man thinks coach Bill Belichick will use the controversial players to help control and send a message to his locker room."

That either could be cut isn't that shocking -- as we've previously noted, both Haynesworth and Ochocinco restructured their deals. Haynesworth is owed almost zero (!) dollars for 2011 if he's cut, and Ocho will make just $2.5 million.

Both players have their deals set up so that the money would spike in 2012 and 2013 ... if they stay around.

So will they? Well, maybe not. After all, the reason both Ocho and Big Al were such "smart additions" is that they're cheap, talented options who can still produce if they manage to fall in line.

Patriots Preseason

For my money, Haynesworth seems the more likely fella to get cut. Belichick has always been enamored of Ochocinco, who actually fits what the Patriots need offensively.

That being said, this could all be another grand scheme orchestrated by Belichick to motivate his newly acquired, low-paid, big-name veterans. (Though that's not likely; but it would be amusing.) Or it could, as Pompei was told, be designed to motivate the rest of the team.

But what it really boils down to is whether or not Belichick believes that Haynesworth and Ocho can contribute to helping this team win a Super Bowl in 2011 -- as our own Pete Prisco writes, the "real message" sent by cutting either/or of the new additions is that they can't help achieve that goal.

The money they could and should get in 2012 and 2013 is irrelevant right now, as it's certainly not guaranteed to be there at the end of the year.

And, for all we know, it might be off the table by the end of the preseason.

Wouldn't surprise me. Weren't they the last team to look at John Lynch? If BB thinks it's broke, what do you think he's going to do? They gave up draft picks to get these 'players'. You don't see this team fall apart year after year, do you? How'd you like to be a Bengals fan? Ha!

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

Brandon Merriweather has been a slight disappointment in His progression dispute the fact He tooled under the Great Rodney Harrison

I'm a huge patriots fan, and not a huge fan of Merrieweather. That being said, how can you say he's underachieving? He made the pro-bowl last season?

Yeah like we haven't heard this kind of BS before. I'd like to play the wait and see game here. I really don't see both players going. They need Albert holding down the middle and Chad is easy to replace with what the Pats have now. I guess time will tell the whole story here.

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

OK Guys, here it is in a nut shell if you watched the Pre Season Game against the Jags. We saw younger players step up such as wide receiver Price, if he continues to impress over the next few pre-season games He is more of a speedster and break way threat then Ocho is . Yes Cinco's got experience and works hard but if the youth at his position are developing such as Price, Tate, and Shephard if you throw in Welker, Branch,(Tight End Hernandez)then that makes Ocho a #3 Wide out at best. So Keep him the one year get the 2+ million you paid him for him out of him on the field and give him a pink slip next season.
Know for Fat Albert again He is a malcontent walking Donut Factory who would give any of the Foxboro Police Deptment Officer a run for their  in a Donut Eating Competition. His talent on the field is medic ore at best and with the athletism shown in the youth on defense might give them the added incentive they need to step up if Big Al's slot becomes vacant.
Adding Darren Sharper to the fold is only feasible if the youth are showing great promise to start next season as a stop gap. Brandon Merriweather has been a slight disappointment in His progression dispute the fact He tooled under the Great Rodney Harrison.
If they are looking for more dept at wide receiver over the short term then signing T,J. Housmenzadha is a safe grab. As he is still hungry, wants to redeem his career and would keep pressure on Ohocinco to tow the line & perform or He can be replaced with T.J..

No agent is stupid enough to allow that to happen.  If the Patriots arre responsible for paying their future years, then there is no chance in Hell that the Patriots will cut them and get nothing for taking on these big contracts
Do you pay any attention to NFL football....players get cut every year to avoid "bulky back ends" and "paying for their future years" as NFL contracts are not guaranteed.  Haynesworth's $100million dollar contract had $41 million in bonuses that were guaranteed.  Those bonuses were paid by the Redskins up front.  The remaining $59 million is not guaranteed---if Haynesworth gets cut he gets nothing.
