'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco are now Patriots. This is because, we're all told and we all believe, Bill Belichick is a genius, capable of controlling anyone that enters his locker room and turning a malcontent into a productive player.

But Dan Pompei, writing at the National Football Post, says the Patriots may have other ideas, and that he was told last week that "one or both" of the dynamic duo could be cut before the season begins.

"One NFL executive familiar with the Patriots ways told me he believes one or both of the big name acquisitions will be cut before the season starts," Pompei writes. "The front office man thinks coach Bill Belichick will use the controversial players to help control and send a message to his locker room."

That either could be cut isn't that shocking -- as we've previously noted, both Haynesworth and Ochocinco restructured their deals. Haynesworth is owed almost zero (!) dollars for 2011 if he's cut, and Ocho will make just $2.5 million.

Both players have their deals set up so that the money would spike in 2012 and 2013 ... if they stay around.

So will they? Well, maybe not. After all, the reason both Ocho and Big Al were such "smart additions" is that they're cheap, talented options who can still produce if they manage to fall in line.

Patriots Preseason

For my money, Haynesworth seems the more likely fella to get cut. Belichick has always been enamored of Ochocinco, who actually fits what the Patriots need offensively.

That being said, this could all be another grand scheme orchestrated by Belichick to motivate his newly acquired, low-paid, big-name veterans. (Though that's not likely; but it would be amusing.) Or it could, as Pompei was told, be designed to motivate the rest of the team.

But what it really boils down to is whether or not Belichick believes that Haynesworth and Ocho can contribute to helping this team win a Super Bowl in 2011 -- as our own Pete Prisco writes, the "real message" sent by cutting either/or of the new additions is that they can't help achieve that goal.

The money they could and should get in 2012 and 2013 is irrelevant right now, as it's certainly not guaranteed to be there at the end of the year.

And, for all we know, it might be off the table by the end of the preseason.

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

It's lame journalism, totally unsubstantiated.  Anyone anywhere could get cut.  What I find most amusing however is the premise that Belichick is ingenious no matter how the cards are played.  He's sending a message, saving a buck down the road or whatever.  Perhaps he thought both of these guys would lead the Pats to the promised land and was wrong.  No, that couldn't be the case.

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

What an awful article. I guess anyone can be a writer these days if all you have to do is speculate and make up sh@#. Write something substansive, you know, facts. Why post anything at all. I will be sending in my resume this week for a job. I can write articles all day on speculation. What a joke!

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

Neither one of them is going anywhere. There is nothing else to write about in New England right now so they have to make a story. I think the Patriots will be strong with both players playing. Haynesworth as a spot player and Chad as a statrer. I know as a Bills fan Im not looking forward to playing em!

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

Is this journalism? There is absolutely nothing substantive to lend any creedence to this rumor. Some other NFL executive who is familiar with the Patriots thinks that Belichick might cut one of these guys to send a message? Maybe if this outsider had any actual knowledge of such a plan this report might have some value, but this doesn't appear to be the case. This is one of the dummest things I've seen posted by CBS, and I've seem some dumb sh*t from you guys. How do you get away with this crap?

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

I'd keep Ocho....Love him or not? You know if he were to get within "sniffing" distance of a Super Bowl? He'd run through a wall, granted for himself and not the team. Quite franklyn if it was my team? I couldn't give a hoot. In Ocho's mind it would establish his "STARDOM", and maybe deliver another "Trophy" to the State of Massachusetts. If "nothing" less Ocho has that ego to feed, where as in the case of Haynesworth. I'm "ONLY" torn because I feel once he loses football? He's going to have a "TRAGIC" end, I can feel it in my bones. But those are demons for him to deal with? I'm not that foolish to think he didn't get paid for a reason. Helped to win games whivh put butts in seats. But also having said that too, to just "SHELFISHLY" piss on your fellow teammates who set goals for themselves, after you got yours? Haynesworth you got your money, and just away. The Patriots in particular, but for the League, and it's fans in general. We will "ALL" be much better off when your name has been FORGOTTEN............

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

You would think dropping Randy Moss would be more than enough to send a message. I don't believe they brought these two players there to merely send a message.

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

another stupid article without merit, trying to get some readership. why don't they add that after they get cut, sources close to the pats say that a ufo piloted by elvis will escort them out of new england.

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

This article is not worthy of any reporters time. Unless the source was a Patriot executive, why publish this? Even if one of these guys is released, it would likely have little to do with sending a message to the team. It would mean they did not show the coaches that they would help the team win a Super Bowl. BB and Brady (and Mr. Kraft) are about winning SB's. I will say this. I took my son to their practice on Wednesday and Ocho Cinco was an hour and a half late onto the field and when we went into the Pro Shop, they had no Ocho Cinco jersey's, which I thought was strange. These would be good sellers since he was well received by the fans.
