Apparently, Titans RB Chris Johnson doesn’t just want top-tier running back money in order to end his holdout from Tennessee camp. He wants top-tier NFL player money. That’s the word from ESPN.com, which reports that there are no signs the Johnson-Titans impasse will end anytime soon.

Johnson's Contract Journey
Although the Titans have stated they’re willing to make Johnson the highest-paid RB in the league -- if you were looking for comparisons, Adrian Peterson will make $10.7 million this year, and the Panthers gave DeAngelo Williams $21 million guaranteed this offseason -- they actually haven’t made a formal offer to Johnson’s agent.

Meanwhile, Johnson, whose base salary for 2011 is $800,000, says he wants $30 million guaranteed for his next contract, and he’s willing to lose a year of accrued free agency to do it. It should be noted that Tennessee gave Johnson a raise to end his holdout last year, so when the Titans say they won’t negotiate with Johnson if he’s not in camp, it’s questionable whether they mean it.

Especially since we all know how important Johnson is to their cause.

Otherwise, the Titans will feature Javon Ringer, who hurt himself in Tennessee’s first preseason game and missed Monday's practice, as their starting RB. Which might not be a terrible thing, because it seems like the coaching staff and players are impressed at Ringer’s talent (even if the awesomeness of Johnson has blocked most everybody else from seeing it).

But Tennessee also doesn’t know exactly what it’s getting if the Titans need to get him 25 carries a game. With Johnson, they do.

Yeah dont pay this punk. He still is under contract. Get into camp and play football. I hope he sits all year. One year dont prove squat. So he can run fast. Unlike Adrian who can run fast, run people over and accept the contract he signed.  Now quit shakin your head and get into camp!

Whatever CJ

You'll get your contract, then you'll tear your ACL or something and be done.  You were never going to hold up for a real long NFL career anyway, so that's why you want that guaranteed money - you must have JaMarcus Russell posters taped up over your bed.  Sigh, too bad you aren't as good as you think you are.

Didn't Johnson "guarantee" he'd rush for 2500 yards last year???  Yeah this is a guy of guarantees....I "guarantee" Chris Johnson is an average RB who thinks he's way more important than he really is.

Every black football player is a drug dealer? You're a moron who knows nothing about life tucked under your mother's skirt. You're also a racist who wouldn't survive a day in the "hood." Typical white guy who hides behind closed doors saying racist coments and is scared to death with a "minority" in the elevator. By the way, Chris Johnson is that franchise. Their famed coach isn't there and they let go of Vince Young. Attendance brings revenue, not hard headedness. Titans, give him the $$$. He deserves it.

  • If he's not happy with that, then he can go back home and see what the pay scale is for being the most prolific drug dealer in the hood.      Wow, imagine that...a redneck racist on the CBS boards.

Titans would be fools to pay Johnson $30 million guaranteed. Make him the highest paid RB in the NFL, somewhere in the neighborhood of $12 million. If he's not happy with that, then he can go back home and see what the pay scale is for being the most prolific drug dealer in the hood. There is a reason RB's are not paid on the scale of QB's. Their impact is less, and their time frame is nowhere near that of a QB. There will always be more RB's available. Tennessee is going nowhere, with or without Johnson. So why throw $30 million away, and the risk Johnson going into the tank, and becoming "semi-retired" as soon as he gets his money? Not worth it. It makes more sense to finish dead last this season and give the $30 million to Andrew Luck, a player who CAN make a difference for a long time. Johnson needs to get his head out of the clouds and smell the pork rinds. He isn't all that.

Can you blame him? He's going to be irrelevant in 3 years just like almost every other running back. Their shelf lives are just so short, so he needs to get paid while he can.
