Last year, Andy Benoit and I had quite a debate about whether Saints starting RT Jon Stinchcomb should be included on a top-five list of all the NFL tackles. I said yes. Andy ridiculed me for that, writing, “If putting Stinchcomb on your list is meant as a joke, that’s funny. If you’re being serious, that’s even funnier.”

I was serious, but apparently, Saints coach Sean Payton leans more toward Andy’s way of thinking.

That’s because, as Rapid Reporter Larry Holder writes, Payton released Stinchcomb on Monday, ending his eight-season tenure in New Orleans.

The reason: as Payton said, via the New Orleans Times Picayune, the Saints wanted to try out younger players like Zach Strief and Charles Brown. Though Payton considered keeping Stinchcomb, who was due to make $2.25 million this year, ultimately he wanted to give more reps to the younger players.

"It's hard,” Strief said after practice, via the Saints official site. “It's like someone telling you that you get something you always wanted but at the detriment to your brother."

Said QB Drew Brees: "One of the greatest teammates I've ever had. Obviously he's going to be missed."

And I’m pretty sure Stinchcomb won’t be on anybody’s top-five list this year.

Saints release starting RT Jon Stinchcomb

The falcoons always want our leftovers because they know we release real football players. The Falcoons will never be a class organization like the Saints simply because of their coaching staff. So stop trying to grab up all our players whom we let go because they will never play for your team like they did for the Saints.....WHO DAT!!!

If the Ravens don't make a move on this guy I wlil be tremendously upset. By far and away, the largest issue the Ravens have right now is RT. Oniel Cousins is nothing more than a backup and Jah Reid is only a rookie. And quite frankly, I wouldn't be comfortable with either starting against Pittsburgh. Jon Stinchcomb might not be that amazing but compared to what's there for the Ravens, he's still an upgrade.

If the Falcons were smart they would pick this guy up and at least have him as a back up. You can never have to many quality lineman and one that can teach younger players is pretty priceless.

Not defending Stinchcomb but you must not follow the Saints too much.  The man played with a torn quad for almost the whole season last year.

lost money

he's too old and washed up--the Saints need to go younger and better.
