Fitzgerald wants new deal with Cards by Sept. 4

FitzgeraldPosted by Josh Katzowitz

We know Larry Fitzgerald is happy with the team’s latest additions (QB Kevin Kolb and TE Todd Heap) and with the fact that his contract forbids the Cardinals to franchise-tag him once his deal ends after this season.

Now, Fitzgerald would like to be really happy by Sept. 4.

That, according to SI.com, is the date of his self-imposed deadline to get done a long-term contract extension with the Cardinals -- the club with which Fitzgerald has stated that he wants to retire. Fitzgerald apparently wants six years added to his deal, but if the two sides can’t come to an agreement by the end of the preseason, Fitzgerald said he won’t negotiate with the team until after the regular season is complete.

Fitzgerald told SI that the two sides were closer to a deal than they were last week, and when asked how far the sides were from reaching an agreement, Fitzgerald said, “Not too far away.”

The Cardinals, I’m sure, would like to continue making Fitzgerald happy by getting a deal done before the deadline. If not, there’s a chance Fitzgerald is going to be really, really sad heading into the season.

Fitzgerald wants new deal with Cards by Sept. 4

If the Cards know better, they had better give "Fitz" his money or they will lose their best offensive threat on the team. In my opinion, he should have been offerred a brand new contract in order for him to be a Cardinal for life, but it's been known in the past about the Cardinals are somewhat stingy about spending $$$ on their top-notch player(s). When it's all said and done, the Cardinals we will hear it in the news that the Cardinals had signed "Fitz" to a long term deal that will make him the richest Cardinal player in franchise history.....Real Talk!!Money mouthMoney mouthMoney mouth

The only question was if Fitz wanted to be around. I will go on his word and say he does, so the cards did their part and he responded with willingness. We see more and more players leaving teams after a great stint and teams canning guys after the same story like time and success. It is refreshing to see a franchise want to make a player happy and a player wanting to stick it out with a single team. This time in society loyalty is a word we seldom hold in our own characters. Hopeful more people will pay attetnion to the Fitz of the game rather then the majority that jump ship. Only time will tell us how it goes but he deserves top tier money but more importantly, respect.

Same as with ANY business, if you can get paid MORE, and can rest easy KNOWING you will have your job for a few years, the man deserves and will get it from the Cards. If not, then they are not only disrespecting what he has done for the team as a business, but they make a poor Business decision. Winning teams fill the seats, top tier players make winning teams. End of story.

I agree that he's not going anywhere but, teams don't have to spend a minimum this year.  And I think they have next year to do whatever also.  After that is when they have put up the ca$h.

If the Cardinals don't sign him to a long term deal soon this guy is gone. He is not messing around. The rumor is that he wants to play here forever but for big, big money. And if they don't give it to him soon he'll be that free agent and the vikings will get him next year. He wants to back to Mn and play out his career. It will be a long term deal either way. Hopefully the Cardinals comes to their senses and get a deal done. Otherwise he is in Mn next year.
