Panthers make Ryan Kalil highest-paid center

It’s pretty clear the Panther see something special in Ryan Kalil, franchise-tagging him before the lockout and promising to pay him $10.2 million just for this season.

Now, the Panthers won’t need to do that. In fact, Carolina is going to pay him even more money.

As Rapid Reporter Steve Reed writes, the Panthers have signed Kalil to a long-term deal, and according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the new contract is for six years and $49 million (including $28 million guaranteed).

In case you’re not sure Kalil is worth the kind of money that makes him the highest-paid center in the league, remember that he’s been a Pro Bowl selection the past two years and that Carolina needed to make a big investment to the person who is going to help protect -- and snap the ball to -- franchise player Cam Newton for the next few seasons.

Saying he is a great center is an understatment but thiws is much more then just locking up a center. This adds the cap space for the Panthers to be able to go get a solid receiver and Corner which they desperatly need. Also now that Edwards goes to the IR, they need another DT to take up some space and stop that middle lane. If you saw the Miami game Bush was running through the middle like he was Barry in his prime. If he did that imagine what the big backs will be able to do, they need to restructure S. Smith and C. Gamble to, that will free even more room for better players when teams start releasing some more skilled players. Cam and Clausen both need more time before we count them out.

We'll see how long you are talking smack about Cam Newton. Cam will be a star in this league sooner than later. He has all the tools.

Nice job locking Kalil up long term ---- he's a great, solid player !!!!
Now, all they need is a QB for him to protect !!!
I say trade Sham while you can still get something for him !!!
Maybe you can find a team that will give up a 7th round draft choice
for a cancer such as Sham !!
By mid season --- they will wieh they had taken my advice !!!

Ryan Kalil is not only one of the best centers in the league but he is also a great leader in the Panthers locker room. I am glad to see the Panthers spending money on a core of panther players that should be good for a long time.

You're wrong, Ryan Kalil was franchise tagged before the lockout for 10 million, extending him and taking off that tag gives us 5-6 more million in cap space. A guy like Ryan will work for his check, only giving up 7 sacks his whole 4 year career making him a 3x pro-bowler.
