Cards give Fitzgerald huge extension (VIDEO)

You know that self-imposed deadline of Sept. 4 for Larry Fitzgerald and the Cardinals to get a contract extension done? Well, you can forget it. A new contract, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, has been completed.

And the figure is a mind-blowing number: eight years, $120 million with $50 million guaranteed.

Before the final figures were tallied, the Cardinals front office said it had no problem making Fitzgerald one of the highest-paid players in the league -- and the best-paid player in team history -- and to see him retire as a Cardinals player. Now, it seems like there's a pretty good chance they’ve done it (Fitzgerald will turn 28 at the end of this month).

"It's interesting," Fitzgerald said. "I told Mr. (Michael) Bidwell how much I hate this part of sports. This is the game I love. I'm so passionate about it. When you talk about the business side, it makes me uncomfortable. I'm really happy to put it behind us."

Fitzgerald's Rich Deal
And though we all assumed that Fitzgerald wouldn't want to sign a long-term deal unless the Cardinals made marked improvements in free agency last offseason, Fitzgerald said that wasn't the case.

"I'm not one to try to hold a hammer over anybody's head," said Fitzgerald, who already owns most of the team's receiving records (as well as the league's playoff receiving records, accumulated during the team's Super Bowl XLIII run). "This is Mr. Bidwell's team. He's going to do everything he can to make this organization go. The activity in free agency this year is something I haven't seen since I've been here. That's a sign of things to come. We're going to continue to be aggressive making this team better. I'm confident that's going to happen."

And considering Arizona already has given QB Kevin Kolb a $63 million deal (with $20 million guaranteed), the Cardinals are a team that has to feel confident that they’ll have a high-powered pass offense for years to come.

And in case you want to see the entire news conference from Saturday night, here it is.

Cards give Fitzgerald huge extension (VIDEO)

I am incredibly happy for Fitz!  I'm even happier for the Cards and their fans.  Larry is a consummate pro and a true class act both on and off the field.  Fitz is going to continue to be a factor for years to come and I sincerely hope that the Cards get back to the Super Bowl someday so he can get a ring to add to his HOF career.

This is actually a good deal for both the Cardinals and Fitz.  Fitz gets the deal he wanted with a lifetime of security (barring marriage).  The Cardinals get Fitz locked up for long term and if he can perform for 8 years than the final 2- 4 years will be a bargain if he puts up the numbers he currently puts up.  It's amazing that agents cannot figure this out.  There should never be an instance where an agent cannot get a deal done.  Leigh Steinberg was probably the best at making sure the deals got done so players were in camp.

I can't think of a more deserving player in all of football to get such a contract.  I agree with the the comments already made that the Cardinals deserve some credit for recongnizing the best when they have it and getting it done.  Fitzgerald caught 90 balls last year with sub-par talent at the QB position.  If Kolb works out and plays well, I look for Fitzgerald to have yet and other Pro-Bowl season.

OK all you Vikings fans can now come back to the reality that Fitz is not "coming home" to Minnesota.  Fitz is a Cardinal and will be all the way to the HoF.  Props to the Cards front office to getting this done.  Now go get another RB to backup Wells and a LT to replace the flag machine Levi Brown.

I've always liked Larry Fitzgerald.  I am glad to see they gave him a contract that will allow him to retire as a Cardinal.  He will certainly go down as one of the best Cardinals ever to play the game.  I don't know if anyone is worth 120 million, and being that Larry is such a class act, I bet he would have taken less, but wanted a long term deal to seal his fate as a lifelong Arizona Cardinal.
