Tiki Barber has had one workout this preseason

Remember when Tiki Barber announced this spring that he was coming out of retirement? And the scuttlebutt that several teams (including the Steelers and Buccaneers) would likely give him a shot at redemption? Well, we're more than three weeks into training camp and Barber has had a grand total of one workout, with the Dolphins, and he left Miami without a contract.

That was on August 3. We haven't heard a word from him since, even though the Patriots are inviting every old-timer with a pulse to Foxboro to go through the paces (they even signed a few).

With the NFL regular season three weeks away, Barber's window of opportunity appears to be slamming shut. The New York Daily News Gary Myers writes that despite Barber's complicated back story, the former Giants running back has earned the right for another shot.

"Regardless of what you think of how Barber left the Giants in his prime - and it wasn't pretty - or the comments he subsequently made about Eli Manning or Tom Coughlin, or how he split from his wife while she was pregnant with twins, that has nothing to do with this simple fact: He deserves a chance to prove he can still play," Myers wrote Saturday.

"Michael Vick and Plaxico Burress each missed two full seasons serving jail time and had no trouble finding work. But nobody wants to touch Barber."

For all the reasons Myers cited above. Both Vick and Burress were considered good teammates -- something we can't say about Barber -- and both possessed enough raw ability, even after stints in prison, that several teams thought signing them was worth the risk.

Barber's a 36-year-old running back four years removed from his last NFL snap. In football terms, 36 might as well be 86. And his inability to get along with teammates and coaches negates any on-field talents he might have left.

"Somebody might give him a tryout. Nobody is going to give him any money," one GM said when Barber announced in March he was coming back. "I wouldn't even acknowledge it. I would rather read the cartoons. What running back plays at 36? Who wants to bring a guy in for one year?"

Barber's best shot at resurrecting his NFL career might come after the regular season is underway and only if a team has a run on injuries at the running back position and are in desperate need for help. Otherwise, his un-retirement announcement will be just that: words.

Myers adds that "Barber had two years and $8.2 million left on his Giants contract when he retired. He turned down a four-year, $13.2 million deal to work at Fox, where he built up a lot of good will and on-air experience during his playing days, to accept NBC's three-year, $5.7 million deal. He retired too early and then took the wrong TV deal."

Unlike when Barber abruptly retired in 2006, his NFL career is now out of his hands. On the upside, former Giants head coach Jim Fassel has extended Barber an offer to join UFL's Las Vegas Locomotives.

Tiki Barber has had one workout this preseason

Unfortunately, Tiki Barber is a victim of his own over-inflated ego. Every decidion he's made since he reached the pinnacle of his football career has been suspect to say the very least. It would have been interesting for all the old heads out there to see what dude could do at the RB position at 36 years of age but because karma has a way of catching up with all of us sooner or later... Tiki has a few debts to pay at this point. So he may never get to lace em up again as a result. Moral of the story is...

1. Never betray your teammates or your coach, especially after you're long gone from the squad (not a very manly move)
2. Never retire before your twin, especially if both of you can still play at a high level
3. Never ever leave your pregnant wife, when you're in the public eye, for a cute young intern...

The phrase "Player Hater" takes on a whole new meaning, when you're guilty of this many violations. Good Luck Tiki... What's the worst thing that can happen at this point? Oh yeah... T.B. better start looking for a new young cutie cuz its only a matter of time before Ms. "Right Now" realizes baby mama is going to ultimately get most of dude's chedder. This story is beyond sad. Its down right pathetic. But Tiki should have been enlightened enough to understand the error of his ways... so he gets very little sympathy from me.

Ever hear the statement "don't burn bridges" well the smell that Barber puts out is gasoline and matches.  He didn't just retire, he retired and then did the media tour and blasted his team, coaches and everything else he could think of.  Now he can't get a job, gee wonder why.  Now, when you also bring up Vick and Burress remember their positions don't take the physical beating that a running back does, and while their mouths didn't exactly help them during their troubles they didn't commit Team Suicide either.  A running back out of the game four years, and 36 years old is going to generate certain "talk" but very little action, as we see here.  Should have kept your mouth shut and grabbed the ball and paycheck for another two years or so.

This isnt about whether you think he deserves or doesnt deserve a chance at a workout. You must think a lot of yourself to think your the answer on who deserves what. Give me  a break. This is only about whether this cat can still carry the the rock, because this is pro football.. Its a business and if he can produce then hes golden. If he cant , hes done. I dont care if he took a crap  on his neighbors lawn or if hes 82 years old. If he still can get the job done then hand the man the ball and lets go get some points! I'm not lookin for a choir boy, I'm lookin for a football player.

As poor of a choice it would be for someone to pick him up, part of me really wants to see what he's got left in the tank.  If he is able to play it makes for good entertainment, if he gets destroyed it also makes for good entertainment.  But there's pretty much no way we will get to see.

While our RB's are dropping like flies, I would give him a one year deal for next to nothing but tons of incentives around yards, carries and scores.  What's the downside unless he is that big of a douche in the locker room.

The problem is that Tiki Barber would be an eleven year veteran.

In 2010 that would have been $820,000 minimum salary (unsure what it went up to, as rookie league minimum jumped from $325,000 to $375,000 per year in the new deal). If he is on the week one roster it becomes guaranteed. That is a lot of money for skills that could be matched with an undrafted FA rookie at at least half the price.

LMAO @ somebody thinking Barder deserves another chance! We have proven RB's still bumming around the league. I love love to hear some justification about how a retired 36 year old RB deserves another chance?? Another chacne? WITH WHO?? You gotta be freakin kidding me. The notion of this is absurd.
