49ers trade Taylor Mays to Bengals

It was nearly three weeks ago that the 49ers emailed the 31 other NFL teams to see if there was any interest in their 2010 second-round pick, safety Taylor Mays.

For 18 days and two weeks of preseason games, there wasn't. But on Monday, the 49ers finally unloaded Mays on the Bengals for an undisclosed draft pick, according to CBSSports.com Rapid Reporter Michael Erler.

Mays played in all 16 games last season, including six starts, and totaled 31 tackles and two passes defended. He was drafted during Mike Singletary's tenure as head coach, but fell out of favor with coaches during the second half of last season. Singletary was fired and replaced by Jim Harbaugh, and Erler writes that defensive coordinator Vic Fangio all but said Mays wasn’t going to make the team.

So it's curious that the Bengals would give up anything to acquire Mays knowing that he would likely be looking for work in a few weeks. And if the argument is that Cincinnati didn't want competition for Mays' services if and when he became a free agent, we'd point out that none of the 31 teams originally expressed interest in Mays earlier this month.

Making the Bengals' decision even harder to understand: CBSSports.com Rapid Reporter Paul Dehner Jr. doesn't think Mays will help Cincy's secondary either. "[Mays] won’t be an answer at safety. Mays hardly played the second half of last season and without doubt was going to be cut by the 49ers. Mays has incredible size and speed, but never showed anything resembling football instincts to be effective."

There's a saying that a change of scenery can revitalize a stagnant career. Unfortunately, we have yet to see that happen to a player joining the Bengals. Upside: congratulatory tweets from current Bengals and former USC teammates.

I dont think Taylor Mays will ever be a starting safety in the NFL. He is just not aware enough to play deep in the secondary. He just plain makes too many bad reads.

Steelers=sb, I hope you meant Mays was slow "to react". The kid is not slow in straight line speed. He just does not move untill the ball is in the air or he jumps the wrong route.

He is still an extreme talent as far as size and speed. No, he still can't cover as a SS. But he could make it as a weak side LB in a 4-3. Maybe. It's worth a chance for a 6th or 7th rounder. Just never made sense as a second round pick. Before the draft several teams wanted to try him at LB if he fell to 4th round or later.

And I understand why Bengals gave up a pick for him. Pete may have taken him for free. He is just the size the Colts would try at WLB. And if you don't know, Al would have just told Mays to keep his home and come work across the bay. Mays is close to the same size and speed as the QB the Raiders just picked.

49ers trade Taylor Mays to Bengals

I think it is wrong to say that no ones career has been revitalized since going to the Bengals.  Three years ago, look at a guy Cedric Benson who everyone was calling a "bust" and is now an arguable top 10-15 RB.  Not that I am saying now that Taylor Mays is a Bengal he is a for sure All-Star, I'm just saying give him a chance and maybe he will become the Safety he was made out to be.

Guys!  It's as plain as the nose on his face:  He can play quarterback better than anyone else on the entire Bengals Team!

That has to be it!  Cincinnati is too damn cheap to acquire a known entity for the mess which is the Bengals Offense.   Wink

Benson was a guy with talent but major character concerns. Mays might even be better at linebacker because he is too slow and can't cover. It was masked more in college with all the talent around him.

Wilson sucks, so I am happy as a Steelers fan if they try to start him.
