Bears WR coach puts Roy Williams on notice

Ever since the Bears signed Roy Williams, they've made much ado about how swell he'll be in Mike Martz offense. In fact, they went far enough to demote wideout Johnny Knox by putting Williams in his starting spot alongside Devin Hester.

That might not last long, though, because Williams is apparently out of shape and it's not making the guy in charge of his playing time, Bears wide receiver coach Darryl Drake, too happy.

"I understand that Roy’s got some things to do, as far as getting in shape, but that’s not my fault, and that’s not my concern," Drake said, per Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times. "My concern is making sure, when we play Atlanta, we got the best guys out there, that is going to give us the best chance to win.

"And if Johnny Knox is that guy, then he needs to be out there."

Drake also said that he and Williams talked and that Williams understands that Knox "is hungry" and just waiting to take the other starting spot from him.

As Jensen points out, Drake was Williams coach at Texas, so it's entirely possible that this is a motivational ploy designed to actually make Williams work hard.

But it's also likely that the Bears will go with the wideout best suited to produce immediately. If I were a betting man and I believed that Mike Martz was a sane and rational person, I'd lay some of my blog-earned money on Knox.

Both of those things aren't necessarily true though, so it's still entirely possible that Williams loafs his way through the preseason and ends up starting anyway.

Bears WR coach puts Roy Williams on notice

I believe Knox is the best receiver on this team.
Knox has trouble remembering where he's supposed to be. This is what you get when management won't let go of the dream of the vertical attack. Cutler has the arm strength, but not the touch or the football smarts. Hester is great once he gets the ball in his hands, but that's not a receiver. That's a playmaker. The Chicago Bears need to wise up and realize that theor best bet is Earl Bennett. If his 40 time had been a 4.4 instead of a 4.52, we wouldn't be having this discussion. He's ther best receiver, and they're burying him for a pipe dream.

Bears WR coach puts Roy Williams on notice

If Roy Williams know what's good for him, he had better get his a** in shape because he doesn't have too many times to go around in the NFL,plus him being out of shape wouldn't sit well with other teams that might have any interest in him if the Bears do decide to release him. Roy should know that it takes more than athleticism to survive in the NFL,but that it takes hard work and dedication as well as being in tip-top shape......which he isn't in!

Bears WR coach puts Roy Williams on notice

What?  Roy Williams is struggling to fit in?  Sounds all too familiar for a guy I've taken a shot on in fantasy and he let me down.  I can only imagine having him on a team in real life and what that let down must feel like.  I gave up on him a long time ago, I just don't think he has the work ethic it takes to be a productive NFL wideout.

Williams has always been over rated.  He was a total bust in Dallas, both in TDS and Catches, he had one good year in Detroit but even then only 86 catches.  Now that number isn't bad but it is hardly near the number for someone supposed to be the star receiver.  Cutler is going to have his work cut out for him this year just like Peyton did last year.  Look at the injuries and replacement players he dealt with and they still made the playoffs.

We had him in Dallas. He is a UT player, so we had loyalties from his college days and we were happy to get him. He was pathetic and disgusting to watch. Jerry Jones ate $ 5 million or so to cut him and he doesn't do that often. Plus he had to admit he traded for a POS. Good luck Chicago!

As a Texas-Ex, I humbly agree that Williams is not the guy we expected he'd be in the NFL.  His best years were in Detroit and he has seemed un-motivated since then.

acairb, I do challenge your comment about UT receivers.  I think Jordan Shipley will break the streak and produce for years to come, even on the Bungles.  Also Honorable mention to Eric Metcalf.  Not much after that.
