Is QB the most important position in sports?

On the CBSSports.com Eye on Sports blog, we have introduced the newest feature, an interblog Roundtable discussion where the Eye on Football, Eye on Baseball, Eye on Basketball and Eye on Hockey bloggers can step into a cage match and settle our differences with sharply-pointed words.

Today’s topic: which position is the most important in sports?

While we all know the correct answer is the quarterback, there are arguments to be made for the point guard, the goal-tender, and the starting pitcher.

But is this even an argument? *

*Well, I guess it is, since we’re having this conversation in the first place.

So check it out and you can see how the other blogs try to convince themselves that the quarterback isn’t the most important position in sports. We know the truth, though, don’t we?

Or as Will Brinson writes, “In basketball, teams can be built all kinds of different ways. A great center, a great point guard, run-and-gun, defensive-minded, etc., etc. The same thing works in football, of course, but there's one problem -- it won't work without a great quarterback. Not anymore, not in the NFL, which has become so QB-dominated that it's surprising we're even having this discussion.”

Is QB the most important position in sports?

If we're just talking about the position itself, not who plays it, or how many play it, then Pitcher is the most important. Not by a lot, but definitely by some.

Starting pitchers, middle relievers, setup, and closers are all in the P position on the scorecard. It is so demanding, teams need many of them to get through a season. Often, they nees several to get through a single game. Any weakness in the P position can be exploited mercilessly.

In a single, championship-deciding game, the Pitcher position is a bit more important than the QB position. (This includes the starting and relief pitching as a platooning position)

Is QB the most important position in sports?

I have read a few point out the goalies only play the defensive aspect of the game.  Same with QBs.  However for goalies, this is not true at all.  Goalies can totally impact how an offense is run for a hockey team.  For example Flyers versus Bruins this past season... the Bruins had all the confidience in the world Tim Thomas would stop any Flyers attack, while Flyers did not have that same confidence... so both team's offenses play differently... Bruins played more aggressive... Flyers, when the puck was not in full control by them, would fall back to protect.

The goalie is on the ice the entire game, which no other position does.  Because they are on the ice the entire time, a good goaltender affects the offense ( above) because at all times, they are capable of stopping the other team.  Many of the best offensive teams have had a good goaltender... Lightning this past season would not have been as offensive without Roloson acting like a HoF goalie, Oilers dynasty had Fuhr and Ranford, and were high scorers.. Red Wings had Hasek and they could score... Canuck have Luongo and they are a high scoring team... Canadiens high scoring teams had Dryden or Roy.

Look at the Bruins last year.  8 th overall in Goals For.  They had the best goalie and no superstar scorers.. they just could leave their own
 end with confidence.

So I still say goalie... QB still only affects offense and defense a little with time management, which then the RB really does that.

In team sports, the QB is extremely important.

The best player on an NBA team is as important or more important than the best player on an NFL team. He's one of only 5 players on the court for most of the game, and plays offense and defense.

If we are talking about the position and not the players in the position, the starting pitcher position is probably as much or more important than the QB.

Well I'm glad a few Hockey perspectives first.  I'm not pursuaded away from QB but I am thinking the two are closer (goalie and QB that is...Pitchers please).  A shut down Goalie can change the other teams entire game plan - just like a QB, a goalie is a key and almost necessary ingredient to championship teams - just like a QB, a goalie is the focal point for 1/2 of the game for 1 team (defense) just like a QB (Offense).  I think the difference comes when you consider what a QB does, someone before had a fantastic post which I won't repeat just paraphrase, the amount of decisions and responsibilies a QB has outweighs a Goalie.  QB wins imo.  But I still love hockey too!

QB runs the offense.  QB is responsible for all scoring. QB is responsible for turnovers (ints, fumbles, calling a play where RB fumbles).  QB is responsible for making sure the defense gets a rest(no 4 and outs). and QB is responsible for coming back to win a game i.e. 2 minute drill.  No other position in sports has as enormous responsibility as the QB.  So many facets of the game depend on the decisions made by them.  Goalies can only turn away shots.  Pitchers can only stop the other team, not generate offense(Babe Ruth excluded).  Basketball is a free for all where you find the most talented open player.  So in my humble opinion there is absolutely no position more important than the QB.
P.S.  Tom Brady is god!
P.P.S. I hope Manning's neck gets better so the Pats can school him along with the rest of the Colts.  It makes for a better game, and I don't want them to have any excuses(which also proves the point of the importance of a QB)!

Goalie.  I don't even think it is close, but sure, one can argue a QB.

Goalies can shut down teams as one individual player with very little team help.  QB still needs a WR or somebody.  I would agree pitcher most important for one game.. but on a continuous basis goalie would be the biggest factor.
