Is QB the most important position in sports?

Brady Posted by Josh Katzowitz

On the CBSSports.com Eye on Sports blog, we have introduced the newest feature, an interblog Roundtable discussion where the Eye on Football, Eye on Baseball, Eye on Basketball and Eye on Hockey bloggers can step into a cage match and settle our differences with sharply-pointed words.

Today’s topic: which position is the most important in sports?

While we all know the correct answer is the quarterback, there are arguments to be made for the point guard, the goal-tender, and the starting pitcher.

But is this even an argument? *

*Well, I guess it is, since we’re having this conversation in the first place.

So check it out and you can see how the other blogs try to convince themselves that the quarterback isn’t the most important position in sports. We know the truth, though, don’t we?

Or as Will Brinson writes, “In basketball, teams can be built all kinds of different ways. A great center, a great point guard, run-and-gun, defensive-minded, etc., etc. The same thing works in football, of course, but there's one problem -- it won't work without a great quarterback. Not anymore, not in the NFL, which has become so QB-dominated that it's surprising we're even having this discussion.”

Is QB the most important position in sports?

I'm not a huge hockey fan and I love football, but I think a  goalie is more important. You can shut teams out and alone have more of an impact on the game. A great defense and running back can win you a superbowl with a decent quarterback.

I DONT THINK YOU CAN SAY THAT QB IS THE MOST IMPORTANT...MORE IMPORTANT THAN STARTNG PITCHERS OR GOALIES YES...REMEMBER WHEN EMMITT SMITH HELD OUT AND THE COWBOYS LOST THEIR FIRST TWO GAMES...THEY STILL HAD AIKMAN ON THE FIELD...WHEN SMITH CAME BACK THEY WERE A MUCH BETTER TEAM...WENT ON TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL I THINK....

Is QB the most important position in sports?

I know that the answer's QB because the goalie doesn't contribute any offense.
The only reason for a QB to contribute any defence is if he throws a pick and even then they tackle like a wet noodle.

Whereas hockey teams can win the Cup with okay goalies (Antti Niemi), when's the last time a mediocre quarterback won a Super Bowl?  Dilfer?  Maybe Brad Johnson?
Niemi is still the exception to the rule thats why it was impressive.  When was the last one before Niemi? Khabibulin for Tampa? but then there is about a 20 year stretch where every winning goalie would be considered an all time great.

So a team won the Stanley Cup in 2010 with an okay goalie, and the last time a football team has won with a mediocre QB was either 2003 or 2000.
Eli Manning in 2007?  If you spend any time on these boards people will have you believe 2008 Ben.

Is QB the most important position in sports?

I love football and QB is a very important position but definitely not the most important.  Having great pitching is much more important position for baseball.

You can win a super bowl or have a good team with a mediocre QB.  Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl with the 2000 Ravens.  NY Giants beat the Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowl with Jeff Hostettler QBing.  Mark Sanchez has taken the Jets to consecutive AFC title games. None of these guys have amazing stats as Quarterbacks in their careers.

You cannot win a world series where your pitching is mediocre. It is not possible. You name me 1 world series team where the pitching did not show up in the playoffs and dominate. I don't think you will.  SF Giants perfect recent example of how pitching wins you a WS. 2005 White Sox pitching in the playoffs was incredible. All World Series teams in the playoffs will have 1 thing in common and that is pitching.

Having a mediocre QB/offense and an amazing defense can win you a Super Bowl. 2000 Ravens and 2002 Buccaneers is a perfect example of this. Don't get me wrong though I love the QB position and some of my favorite players of all time were QB's but defense is necessary to win in football. You cannont win a Super Bowl when your defense does not show up.

Is QB the most important position in sports?

Even though I'm a huge hockey fan, and Tim Thomas' performance certainly makes the goal-tender seem very important, I know that the answer's QB because the goalie doesn't contribute any offense.  Whereas hockey teams can win the Cup with okay goalies (Antti Niemi), when's the last time a mediocre quarterback won a Super Bowl?  Dilfer?  Maybe Brad Johnson?  So a team won the Stanley Cup in 2010 with an okay goalie, and the last time a football team has won with a mediocre QB was either 2003 or 2000.  And don't even talk to me about starting pitchers, when a pitcher plays every game in the postseason he'll be the most important player, but not when there's a constant rotation.

Is QB the most important position in sports?

This is a two horse race between a QB and a goalie.  Like the article said a basketball team can be built any number of ways and starting pitchers don't play every game.

Is QB the most important position in sports?

Yes, QB is the most important position in sports.  Not only does he have to be mentally and physically great in athletics and decision making, but he has to be able to call the game.  The starting pitcher in baseball gets his games called for him by a catcher, assuming the catcher is a good one and is able to call a game.  The center is not the most important in basketball, nor is the point guard.  In basketball all players must be good in order to be competitive, being that their team is much smaller, there is much less room for error, so they are all equally as important.  In football, the QB is the unquestioned leader and the one who touches the ball on almost every snap (other than the center) and he has to be able to carry out coaches orders or make decisions on his own if the play gets blown.  Granted, there are better QBs on certain teams, and the more experienced have more opportunities to call audibles than some of the less experience, but the goal on every NFL team is to have a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady caliber QB making the calls.  I can't think of any other position in sports that can be compared in terms of importance.  No brainer, my vote is for QB!

Is QB the most important position in sports?

Funny! Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't it just the location of where they were filming, the reason of th of all the scrutiny.
All teams can film it just they have to all do it from relatively the same place. Upper deck camera rooms? I don't know just asking.
But anyway they still had to play each down so whah whah whah. In the overall scheme, I am willing to bet it didn't help as much as
anyone thinks.
