Richardson says he doesn't want tattooed Newton

Well, this is an interesting little video of Panthers owner Jerry Richardson talking to Charlie Rose on the set of his talk show Tuesday. In the short clip below, Rose asks Richardson about No. 1 pick Cam Newton and the process of vetting the quarterback.

Before I get into what Richardson’s comments say about Richardson or about his thoughts about a team owner’s relationship to his most marketable star, here’s what Richardson said:

“He was dressed perfectly. I said, ‘Do you have any tattoos.’ He said, ‘No sir, I don’t have any.’ I said, ‘Do you have any piercings?’ He said, ‘No sir.’ I said, ‘We want to keep it that way.”

Richardson continued with a story about Newton saying he, maybe, wanted to grow out his hair but that Newton’s father quickly put a stop to that.

“I said we want to keep no tattoos, no piercings, and I think you have a very nice hair cut.”

Rose then said Richardson sounded a bit like the no-nonsense Vince Lombardi.

“No,” Richardson said, “I just sound reasonable to me.”

I’m not quite sure how to take Richardson’s comments. On the face of it, he comes off … well … I’m not really sure how to put it. It feels vaguely wrong (or perhaps not so vaguely). On the YouTube clip, the description of the video describes Richardson as acting basically like a slave-owner.

I certainly don’t get that out of this clip.

But I do sense an owner who feels he has to create a marketing star out of Newton and that he realizes it’s probably easier to sell to the mainstream a guy who looks “presentable” without tattoos and piercings. I can’t imagine Richardson feels it’s his right to tell players how they should wear their hair* or whether he can hit up the tattoo parlor on his own time. I imagine, after all, there are plenty of Panthers who have tattoos and who have long hair and who have pierced body parts.

*Unless Richardson subscribes with the philosophy of George Steinbrenner.

But if Richardson wanted to come off looking like anything but a meddling owner who inserts himself into a players’ personal lives and their personal choices, he certainly doesn’t succeed here. If anything, I think, it's just kind of weird.

"Actually...this is exactly how this tool is.   Just because someone doesn't 'act' like that, it doesn't mean they are like that.  I'm not saying he's a racist.  But he definitely is acting like a slave owner and did during the lockout."

Isn`t he PAYING players a salary??? Thats not how "Slave owners" ran their business.
If he doesn`t want his players to have tattoos, piercings, then players that don`t like it, must deal with it.
Where I work, they forbid eyebrow, and nose piercings, so why should athletes be treated any different, just because of their outrages salaries?
Remember a time when the NY Yankees were only allowed eyebrows are their only facial hair? Does that mean Steinbrenner was a "racist, slave owner" too?

I spent a career as a teacher where my attire, speech, etc. was restricted.  I considered that part of the job and that was part of what I being paid for: to project a certain image to the public.  Richardson simply wants his players projecting images favorable to NFL's success.

Last time I checked Richardson is the owner of the Panthers and pays the salries of all his players so YES he does have the right to tell them how to wear their hair and even what to wear when working.  Don't think he does go anywhere into indusrty and see if you are not asked to do these very things.  Just because many people want to scream I haev rights if you are employed by someone they have the right to require certain things to be employed.  If there is a problem do not play for that owner.

I happen to trememebr a certain Baseball mogul that did not allow long hair or even facial hair for that matter and off came Damon and Giambis locks!!

Heck when I was a senior in a PUBLIC high school I transfered and at my new high school I was not allowed to have facial hair and had to shave the full beard I was growing since I was 16.

That is just how it happend sometimes.

The hyperbole used by the race baiters is truly actual slaves.  Ask one of the thousands of actual slaves that suffer across the globe if they have anything in common with anyone in the NFL, NBA, or the YMCA league.  Reference to humans that have been and are still being abused in the worst waysas having anything to do with American professional athletes is sad.  Had slaves in this country received enough money for generations to live off of, well, I guess they wouldn't be slaves.  There are thousands of people working for peanuts in America that would lose their job if they show up with a neck tat 'n' some holes in their face.  Last I checked employment discrimination laws have nothing to do with folks that want their body to look like a graffitied underpass.

This is to funny. Pretty sure I would let my QB look however in the hell he wants to, as long as he doesn't throw four interceptions in the late for Delhomme! This guy is a jackass.

Oh, please. He likes clean-cut men for his program, and for role models for the men to come.

Tattoos and peircings are ugly - and if he doesn't want his players to have those things, that's his perogrative, just as it the perogative of players not to want to play for him if they prefer that crap.

It is a surprise, though. I didn't think any athletes got out of college these days without a tattoo somewhere marring their bodies. For Newton not to have followed the crowd in that respect - props to him.

Oh - and slave owners *put* brands and/or tattoos on their slaves.  Today - it's gang leaders who are following in *those* footsteps.
