Finally we have our answer. Finally, it’s been put to rest. Cam Newton is officially the Panthers starting quarterback … for the fourth preseason game.

That’s according to Rapid Reporter Steve Reed, who also writes that Carolina coach Ron Rivera still hasn’t said whether Newton will start the season-opener vs. the Cardinals.

Yet, Reed -- like most everyone else who follows the NFL -- appears to know what eventually will happen. He writes: “Newton will start the season opener at Arizona although, quite frankly, he’s still raw and not really ready. But he’s a better option than (Jimmy) Clausen, who still hasn’t shown the ability to make plays and is slow getting the ball out.”

Newton vs. Clausen
It seems pretty clear that Newton, who will start Thursday night’s preseason game vs. the Steelers, would have to suffer some kind of major meltdown in order to lose his hold on the starting job. And considering Clausen’s knee is banged up at the moment, Newton’s only other competition is Derek Anderson.* Now, all Newton has to do is throw a touchdown pass or, you know, convert a third down attempt (neither has occurred yet this preseason).

*Wouldn’t you rather watch Newton flounder around out there than be forced to watch Anderson do anything?

Which leads us to the conclusion that eventually (probably before the season opener), Rivera will be forced to tap Newton as the starting quarterback. But a word of caution. As ESPN.com’s Pat Yasinskas points out, Newton would be the first Carolina opening-day rookie starter since Chris Weinke in 2001.

And we all remember how well his career went after that.

When will Rivera name Cam Newton the starter?

I think Carolina should live and die with Cam Newton.  He is the future of the Panthers.  Right now some mechanical errors are the majority of his problems. Throwing to RB and TE his is very good at.  Getting to his WR is another story.  I think the Cincinnati game Cam wanted to get Smitty the ball and forgot his other receivers.   i still believe that if Carolina can get off to a 2-2 start that they are going to be a team to deal with.

If Carolina were to end up with the worst Record in the league again.  The #1 Pick will command a hefty price for A. Luck.   They could trade that pick away get plenty of extra picks.  A stud DT, CB and WR in the 1st 2 rounds and Carolina will have a young team to contend with.

Either way Carolina will be a team that will be better as Cam gains experience.

Very, very few young QBs have success starting their 1st year. If they are lucky enough to be on a team with a dominating defense and a strong running game, a la Roethlisberger and Flacco, then success in terms of team wins is possible. If neither of those are present, a la Tebow, Newton, and most others, the rookie is going to struggle and so is the team. One philosophy is throw 'em out there and let them learn, a la Peyton Manning (didn't he set a rookie record for interceptions?), who certainly did learn quickly and improved quickly. The problem is, of course, that if your rookie gets beat to death enough,a la David Carr, he may never recover his confidence in the pocket.

I agree with letting Anderson start the season and bring Newton along slowly b/c the kid isn't ready and this past offseason wasn't a typical one where rookies could work with coaches and teammates to try and get ready. Look at what Newton has done during the preseason, he has shown nothing to make anybody confident he can even lead a scoring drive when the season opens. I hate to see a young guy get ruined when he's clearly not ready to play QB at the NFL level.

I am in agreement that Rivera should at least CONSIDER starting Anderson over Newton. Anderson has been a Pro Bowl QB during his career and although he didn't do much during his tenure at Arizona, he may be a better option based on experience. Newton has been highly erratic during the preseason and starting him may be a mistake in the first game. The Panthers open against Arizona and at least Anderson might know some of the Cardinals defensive calls and tendencies. Food for thought.
