Chris Johnson has a new contract. According to the Tennessean's Jim Wyatt, the Titans and Johnson agreed to four-year, $53.5 million deal with $30 million in guarantees. It took all of training camp and almost the entire preseason, but one of the NFL's best running backs will return to Tennessee's backfield in time for the start of the regular season to do what he does best: take pressure off the offense and put it squarely on opposing defenses.

Last month, Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt said that the organization was willing to make Johnson the NFL's highest-paid running back. Johnson wanted more, and the stalemate continued until Thursday.

Wyatt writes that Johnson was scheduled to make $1.065 million in 2011. With an average salary of $13.5 million, his contract not only makes him the NFL’s highest paid running back, it also puts him in a category among the game’s “elite” players.

Chris Johnson Gets Paid
Wyatt continues: The highest paid running backs in the league make roughly $9.5 million to $10.5 million per year annually over the first three years of the deal. Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson is scheduled to make $10.7 million in the final year of his contract. Last month, the Panthers reached a deal with running back DeAngelo Williams that gave him $21 million in guaranteed money.

Johnson and the Titans met last week but the two sides remained far apart on a new contract. On Wednesday there were reports that there was finally "positive movement for the first time," and, a day later, Johnson has a shiny, new deal. Now the running back will be under contract for the next six years through 2016.

The 24th overall pick in the 2008 draft, Johnson led the NFL in yards rushing the past three seasons. In 2009, he became only the sixth man in NFL history to rush for at least 2,000 yards and ended the year with 2,006 yards.

The Titans, who wrap up the preseason Thursday night at New Orleans, wanted Johnson to at least have a few days of practice with new quarterback Matt Hasselbeck in a revised offense under coordinator Chris Palmer and new head coach Mike Munchak. The only other running back with any NFL carries is Javon Ringer with 59 in his career, and he has been hurt most of the preseason. Rookie Jamie Harper from Clemson started the past two preseason games for Tennessee.

Fullback Ahmard Hall said Tuesday that Johnson would have some work once he does arrive to learn the changes in Palmer's offense, especially with the different terminology. "You're going to have to think," Hall said, according to the Associated Press. "You're not going to just be able to roll in and hit the ground running as if coach (Mike) Heimerdinger were still here. Coach Palmer has put in a lot of good things, bu the language is different. He's definitely going to have to think. The sooner he gets in the better."

With Johnson's contract now out of the way, all that's left is to get Tennessee back to the playoffs. That journey starts in earnest on September 11 when the Titans face the Jaguars in the regular-season opener.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

It does not even matter because no one even metioned race until you did.  What a crock.  Someone needs to look in the mirror to find the racist in the group.

No one cares if Chris Johnson is black, white, orange, purple, blue, or fuscia.  People do care if he whines like a crybaby and slams his loyal fans.

Please STOP bringing race into this.

No 1 is complaining about carson palmer demands to be traded. he is due to make 11.5 million. Why not bitch about him? But let a black man do it and its a problem. I know some of u are going to say race has nothing to do with it, but u are not black r if a woman is raped how can u feel her pain unless u were raped also. make sense. so unless u are black (african american) u cant understand what im talking about. how bout brett farve. any 1 want to take that debate on? thought not. so keep calling mr. johnson a bum and if it were not 4 football he would b selling drugs or in jail. that just shows yr ignorance. we all make mistakes and say things we later regret, or may b yr perfect. if u are u are right up their with GOD

Quite the contrary, I hope the Bengals tell Palmer to sit his whiney happy ass in his Lazy Boy and watch the season on NFL Sunday Ticket.

Bengals Management to Carson Palmer, "We're sorry that you have decided that you changed your mind and want to play this year(Conveniently a week before the season starts).  We are happy with Andy Dalton, and quite frankly, he's better than you.  Besides, we are paying him low dollars, and we'll suck anyhow!"

All whiners and bitches should be made to sit out if they don't like their current deal.  Shouldn't of signed the deal in the first place!!!

B 4 real, please take your racist card that you so love to play at every opportunity and go home. Or go sit at the head of the idiots line. All you ever do is play the race card on everything. And, just so you know, Carson Palmer isn't holding out for more money. He's tired of playing for the Bengals. Period.

As far as the "fake fans" thing...
First off, I'm a Cowboys fan (not affraid to admit it) and have been since the early 80's when I was old enough to fall in love with the game of football!!! I had my share of accusations of the same thing through the early 90's when the Cowboys were GREAT, but it never bothered me at all, because I knew better.  All these people (Tiatns fans)getting so upset over it and voicing their opinions just makes me think they feel the need to defend themselves because they secretly ARE fake fans. Lol!! I don't know about most of you, but I recall a time when the Tennessee Titans didn't even exist in the National Football League and unless you were a Houston Oilers fan prior to that (which I highly doubt because very few existed outside of Houston) then you were a fan of another team and abandoned them to jump on the Titans bandwagon at some point. Which in my opinion is what makes you a "fake fan". Kinda like how I didn't know a single Patriots fan before the "Brady era" and for the past several years guys my age and even some people I know personally (who's names I won't mention) have been "crawling out of the woodwork" talking about how they've been Patriots fans there whole lives....Bullshit!! Lol!! Why don't you just pick a team and stick with them through thick and thin!!!

Like the Falcon fan said, by your dumb logic, that means there isn't a Titans fan in junior high school yet.... What ignorant stupidity !

Maybe your friends are lying about being Patriot fans their whole lives, but I can tell you one thing: I've been a Pats fans since about the time you discovered what a football is and that is over half of my life.

Before you post such junk, why don't you try getting out and meeting more people in the world. It sounds like it hasn't been too long since you were allowed to cross the street.
