Safety Brandon Meriweather may have made the Pro Bowl the past two seasons, but it wasn't enough to keep the Patriots from cutting him Saturday. He wasn't out of work long, however. New England's 2007 first-round pick signed with the Bears Sunday, the team announced.

It's a one-year contract, which suggests that the Bears aren't completely convinced Meriweather is a long-term answer in the secondary. If anything, he adds depth and experience, something Chicago lost in Thursday night's preseason finale when backups Craig Steltz and Chris Conte suffered a hip injury and a concussion, respectively.

ChicagoBears.com adds that "Meriweather becomes the sixth player on the Bears roster who was drafted in the first round by another NFL team, joining Jay Cutler (Broncos), Julius Peppers (Panthers), Roy Williams (Lions), Chris Spencer (Seahawks) and Amobi Okoye (Texans).

"The Bears do not have to make a corresponding roster move to make room for Meriweather until he officially signs his contract."

Meriweather, 27, started 40 games during his four-year stint in New England, recorded 261 tackles and 12 picks. However, his Patriots career might best be remembered for the vicious hit on Todd Heap during the 2010 season that led to a $50,000 fine and a vow to remain aggressive, "point blank."

As for what the Bears are getting, CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco wrote Saturday that "If you can't cover these days, you aren't worth having on the field." Colleague Clark Judge added, "New England isn't afraid to make the difficult decision, and it just proved it. Again. … Bottom line: Change is good."

We'll have to wait and see if that tenet holds for the Bears, too.

Bears sign Brandon Meriweather to 1-year deal

I am personally thrilled with the Bears adding this guy.  When i look at his stats I see INTs and a good amount of them.  having that come from a safety is going to be something new for the Bears seeing how ever since Brown our safeties in general have blown hard.  People say Meriweather is overrated and cocky.  If he can continue to post 80+ tackles and 4 INTs a year I'm perfectly fine with a cocky attitude.  Seems like another my way or the highway moves by Bill.  Belichek is the most cocky guy in that Patriots locker room and I think it's hilarious that he doesn't like guys with an attitude.  It would be nice if all these former 1st rounders finally produce as advertised.  If they do and Roy Williams somehow has a huge year, Okoye turns into a beast (excellent preseason, hopefully a sign of things to come), and Cutler actually gets protection, aided by Spencer, and throws for almost 4,000 yds... ahh a Bears fan can dream.

Ok cool but why do the bears simply refuse to go after a good wide receiver they just let there best receiver go or should I say tight end  andyou would think they would try and replace him

Dabiggchill is great comic relief. In the last decade if you added both Green Bays and Pittburgh Super Bowls then you have the same number of Super Bowls as the Patriots...and that's with the Patriots losing to the Giants because of the luckiest drive in the history of Super Bowls (e.g. the shoulda-been-a-sack-on Eli-Manning play followed by a hail marry overthrown pass that was finger-tip cought by a no-name receiver to keep the drive alive). Oh yeah and the Moss move was terrible (he only had the single greatst year ever as a WR ever and Brady had the single great year at QB ever....yeah but that was stupid to bring him in right?). lol, freakin amateurs.

Everyone (media, and those who are not free thinkers & let the media tell them what to believe) seems to think Belichick is some sort of guru, genius, or football god.  Let's remember... NE hasn't won anything since it made the every brilliant decision to bring on perenial POS Randy Moss.  No titles since then.. that was 07.  So, while everyone(see above) gets down on their knees to take turns kissing Belichick's ring & then suckin' him off... Real teams, such as Pitt and GB go on winning.  They groom their talent from the ground up.  This same philosophy is why Philly will not win anything either.  People who deserve titles win them, and those who do not... well see Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, and many others.
