Bo Jackson says Cam Newton, Panthers 'are scary'

Cam Newton, the first-overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, and the latest franchise quarterback for the Panthers, has been named the starter as Carolina heads into the regular season. Newton wasn't particularly impressive during the preseason, completing just 42 percent of his passes (24 for 57, 300 yards) and throwing just one touchdown, but he showed glimpses of the future and, well, potential can be a powerful aphrodisiac.

Of course, the NFL QB scrap heap is littered with players who had gobs of inherent talent but couldn't ever do anything with it. The reasons for their professional demises are as varied as the names on the list. Clark Judge, our colleague, wrote last week that "If Newton demonstrated anything in three quarters of a 24-13 loss to Cincinnati, it's that he's not ready for prime time. He should sit, and he should sit until he understands what he's doing and what he sees -- because that's not happening now."

Judge reiterated those thoughts again Friday, a day after head coach Ron Rivera made it official.

"Normally, [Newton] would have minicamps, OTAs and quarterback camps to pick up the pro game, but all that got flushed during the lockout. So [he] reported in late July and will start in early September, and good luck. He looks no more ready to play the position than Jimmy Clausen did a year ago.

"But the Panthers have little choice. They can't sell their fans on Clausen or Derek Anderson, so give them Newton -- ready or not -- and that might not be good for him or the franchise. Reason: In a lot of respects it reminds me of the Ryan Leaf situation in San Diego years ago, one that Carolina GM Marty Hurney knows all too well."

It's not all gloom and doom, however. Bo Jackson, one of the greatest professional athletes of the last half-century, recently told Jim Rome (via that Newton possesses rare physical gifts that are the exact right fit for the Panthers' offense. (Seriously, we're not making that up.)

“There isn’t another quarterback in the NFL that has all of those tangibles,” Jackson said. “And when you put all of those tangibles together with the quality of receivers and linemen that he’s got blocking for him, and the running backs that he can get the pill to, this guy is scary. The Panthers are scary.”

There's more.

“When you speak of Cam Newton, I’ll put it to you just like this: He has the arm strength and power of Dan Marino and John Elway combined,” Jackson said. “He is quicker than Michael Vick, faster than Michael Vick. And he will run over you with the power of a Jerome Bettis, Bo Jackson, Earl Campbell. That’s the kind of guy he is.”

Okay, perhaps Jackson's laying it on a bit thick, but he's clearly enamored with Newton's raw skills, something no one could say about Clausen a year ago.

But before we all start making Super Bowl plans, something worth considering: the Panthers' schedule. It's brutal.

A quick recap for those of you who don't have it committed to memory: @Arizona, Green Bay, Jacksonville, @Chicago, New Orleans, @Atlanta, Washington, Minnesota, BYE, @Tennessee, @Detroit, @Indianapolis, @Tampa Bay, Atlanta, @Houston, Tampa Bay, @New Orleans.

After perusing that list, there's a chance the Panthers, without much effort, could again stumble to two wins despite fielding a much better team. We suspect Jackson doesn't share our skepticism.

Too bad the QB position is 90% brains.   Jeff George had jaw dropping power in his arm, amazing to watch him play.  That doesn't mean he was a great QB.

Bo Jackson says Cam Newton, Panthers 'are scary'

Coming from someone who watched Marino and Elway in their prime, Cam doesn't have the arm strength of either of these guys.   Bo is a complete homer.   Most ridiculous statement I've heard so far for this new football year.

Bo Jackson says Cam Newton, Panthers 'are scary'

Wow.....hey lumpy did you know Michael Vick and Vince Young have been in the league for years?  So they have already been successful (to a degree)

Josh Johnson, you mean stuck #2 in Tampa Bay?  Colin Kaepernick? hahahahahahahaha He can't even beat out sorry Alex Smith.

Terrelle Pryor?? If you think this guy will progress faster than C. Newton you are on some serious drugs.

You could have said Andy Dalton or Blaine Gabbert and you might have been right but those jokers.

Once again it goes back to the brainless, mindless unqualified hatred for Cam Newton.

Newton will be a bigger star than all 4 of the names you listed.  COMBINED.

Michael Vick, Terrelle Pryor, Vince Young, Josh Johnson, and Colin Kaepernick will all find success in the NFL alot sooner than Cam Newton.

Bo Jackson says Cam Newton, Panthers 'are scary'

HHmmmm let me see.  Bo Jackson a freak of an athlete.  A man who was feared in football and baseball

Homer Saints and Chief fans who probably never even suited up.

Since "Bo Knows" more about playing the game at a high level then most of the scrubs on this forum.  I will have to agree with Bo Jackson.
Those of you that don't remember Bo Jackson was a two-time player.  In Football and Baseball.  A freak of an athlete,,,just like Cam Newton.

As an Oriole fan I remember Bo Jackson (Playing for KC) putting his right hand up asking for a time out. The umpire either ignored it or didn't see it.  Bo Jackson swung.  He hit a home run off that pitch.  ONE HANDED

I am sure there might be a little man-love since they are both went to Auburn but so have many other players since Bo's time.  He hasn't given an endorsement like this before.

Stop hating because you gotta play him.  I cannot wait for Cam Newton to beat New Orleans, Tampa and Atlanta at least once this season.  Then maybe the haters will disappear.

Anyway you look at it.  BO KNOWS CAM!!!!!  Deal with it.

How exactly is he faster than Vick? Newton runs a 4.6, Vick a 4.2. Newton was actually tied for the slowest quarterback drafted in the first rd. Locker and Gabbert both ran 4.5, Ponder 4.6. He is defintiely not quicker than Vick, or even Ponder who had the fastest 20 yard shuttle tmie at the combine. He's big, medium fast, medium arm strength, physically strong. In other words he's exactly like Tim Tebow and Vince Young.

Bo don't know diddley!!! I loved Bo as a player, but he is no authority on judging players talent. He only said what he said because he is an Auburn alum. If he played at Alabama, he wouldn't be talking a lick about this chump!

Two words....Vince Young. And this guy will definitely get in trouble at some point in his career. He's no Elway, Marino or Vick. Hell, he's no better than Alex Smith. He's a below average QB and will be for at least a few years. Pull your head out!

Bo Jackson says Cam Newton, Panthers 'are scary'

These statement are way over the top considering Newton hasnt proved anything yet in the nfl. Bo should have waited at least a few games into the season to start throwing out remarks like that. I mean c'mon...the arm strength of marino and elway combined? Lets be real.

Bo is exactly right.  Cam Newton is scary good.  He has the potential to be the most dominant player in NFL history.
