Braylon Edwards avoids DUI suspension, fined $50K

Braylon Edwards pled guilty in court for a DWI and somehow escaped jail time. More good news came Edwards' way on Tuesday, too, as the NFL informed the 49ers that Edwards won't be suspended during the 2011 season.

That's per Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, who also reports that Edwards will be tagged with a $50,000 fine from the league for violation of the league's substance abuse policy. In other words, he's getting off pretty cleanly.

Edwards' case is bizarre because he's been sitting out in limbo for quite some time -- his DUI occurred in September 2010 -- and because he's had other run-ins with the law since his DUI arrest. The league, however, indicated that this fine (and the lack of suspension) was for the DUI only.

"Any other matters will be addressed at the appropriate time," a league spokesperson said.

So, yeah, Edwards could up facing more discipline from the league, although it's not guaranteed. Perhaps, like the rest of the league during free agency, they'll just forget about him.

Braylon Edwards avoids DUI suspension, fined $50K

Braylons episode did not occur during the lockout and was a second offense of the subjective "personal conduct" policy,(He punched someone in Cleveland a few months before the DUI) so he got the fine. Now I agree the lockout excuse was bogus. Britt and the guy fro Tampa should have been penalized as well, but Dictator Goodell does not use me for advice. Now all the haters will bring up Hines Ward for getting a DUI but like Britt and the guy from Tampa it was during the lockout, so if Ward is punished it will be complete hypocrisy due to the explanations given for the seemingly arbitrary punishmnets given out this year!

If a certain CB from Tampa Bay shot someone and was not suspended by the NFL then why should Edwards? The law of the NFL says that prior incidents are not relevant in handing out punishment...because if it was then no NFL player who ever got busted twice would ever...play football again.

I was wondering...can we have Crabtree serve the suspension if Edwards was given one. It's not as if Crabtree was going to be a force to be reckon with this year. Trade him to the Bengals for the rights of/opportunity to talk with Carson Palmer. Carson Palmer might be a good backup for the 49ers. Put Colin Kaepernick on the practice squad and trade Scott Tolzien back to the Chargers. There..everyone is happy. Come to think of it...throw in Moran Norris and we've got a deal.

Hopefully he learned from it and doesn't get another DUI. As for another comment on here. Most people is this country would not lose their jobs for getting a DUI. The NFL should donate that 50K to an alcohol awareness campaign or to help set up some check points if they really cared about the issue. But wait, they probably don't. NFL teams make boatloads of cash by selling $10 beers to drunken fans, many of whom drove to the game and will get rowdy in the stands.

Well his defense for no time in jail was this..."it's not like i shot anybody in the parking lot, or beat anybody up in the bathroom or parking lot."  This could have killed someone just as quickly!  What percentage of Americans would have lost their job with a DUI? Or DWI?  I know i'd lose my job and career with one.
