Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher was dominating in his Week 1 performance against the Falcons. He recorded an interception and returned a fumble for a touchdown as Chicago rolled Atlanta, 30-12.

On Wednesday, Urlacher was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week, but the linebacker won't be with the team for several days and may not be available when the Bears face the Saints Sunday.

According to a statement from the team, Urlacher's mother passed away unexpectedly.

"My first priority right now is to be with my family as we mourn her loss and make the arrangements to lay her to rest," Urlacher said. "This is a very difficult and emotional time for us and I sincerely ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you."

Thoughts and prayers go out to Urlacher and his family.

Brian Urlacher's mother dies unexpectedly

Great post & kudos to "The Sponge." I am a Chicago Bears fan in Chicago & respect the Saints as I am a big fan of Drew Brees. I wish more sports fans around the country were more like you. Well said to the post above & it's refreshing to see that a non-idiot comment was made online for once. It should be a great game played by both teams this weekend. May the best team win. Take care & my deepest regards to Brian Urlacher & his family.

Brian Urlacher's mother dies unexpectedly

Sorry to hear this.....Never been a Bears fan but have ALWAYS been a fan of Urlacher's.

As a Saints fan you might think I would welcome the opportunity to play them without his presences. But in fact, if he feels he can do so and has his family's blessing, I hope we see him Sunday.

God Bless and sorry for your loss, Brian.

Brian Urlacher's mother dies unexpectedly

I've heard people calling Urlacher a baby because he won't play on Sunday when Favre played after his father passed. Who cares what Favre did? Everyone mourns differently and in their own ways. Leave the man alone now until he comes back. My prayers go out to Urlacher and his family. He's a stand up guy and anyone that has met him will agree.
