Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher was dominating in his Week 1 performance against the Falcons. He recorded an interception and returned a fumble for a touchdown as Chicago rolled Atlanta, 30-12.

On Wednesday, Urlacher was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week, but the linebacker won't be with the team for several days and may not be available when the Bears face the Saints Sunday.

According to a statement from the team, Urlacher's mother passed away unexpectedly.

"My first priority right now is to be with my family as we mourn her loss and make the arrangements to lay her to rest," Urlacher said. "This is a very difficult and emotional time for us and I sincerely ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you."

Thoughts and prayers go out to Urlacher and his family.

Brian Urlacher's mother dies unexpectedly

I can't imagine what he is going through but I imagine he will turn to sports to help cope.  Hopefully his team will rally around him as I'm sure he will.

Brian Urlacher's mother dies unexpectedly

Even as  a fan of the Saints family deaths and problems associated wih these times always put into perspective that American football, and indeed sport in general is only a sport, and the first and foremost that the Urlacher's family will need Brian most at this time.

I just hope both teams respect and mark the occasion with a fine game both teams performances

Brian Urlacher's mother dies unexpectedly

People say some really dumb things here all the time and that is what freedom of speech is all about - God Bless America.

But I must say without a doubt that Tom Angelripper is the biggest ass that I have ever seen for what he posted. I hope you choke on every penny you bet buttface.

Bless you, Brian and the entire Urlacher family

Brian Urlacher's mother dies unexpectedly

I agree with the classy fans on here in that my thoughts and prayers are with Brian and his family at this most difficult time. As for the tools and trolls, I am glad to see the administrators are deleting their gibberish! Brian is all class, and a tremendous role model for our youth. He DOES care about others, as his camps and involvement in the Special Olympics plainly show.

God bless the Urlachers!
