Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher was dominating in his Week 1 performance against the Falcons. He recorded an interception and returned a fumble for a touchdown as Chicago rolled Atlanta, 30-12.

On Wednesday, Urlacher was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week, but the linebacker won't be with the team for several days and may not be available when the Bears face the Saints Sunday.

According to a statement from the team, Urlacher's mother passed away unexpectedly.

"My first priority right now is to be with my family as we mourn her loss and make the arrangements to lay her to rest," Urlacher said. "This is a very difficult and emotional time for us and I sincerely ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you."

Thoughts and prayers go out to Urlacher and his family.

Brian Urlacher's mother dies unexpectedly

There really isn't any other time in life that one can truly equate the words "very difficult and emotional time", as when a loved one passes.  The toughest men alive can be broken down to a single fiber when this kind of hurt hits.  From my family to yours, 54.  Condolences, thoughts and prayers are with you.  Head up, we'll see you when you're ready to get back to crushing.  If the ATL game was any indication, hell, we'll see you at the Pro Bowl.  GO BEARS.   RIP Lavoyda Urlacher.

Brian Urlacher's mother dies unexpectedly

Though I know there's little chance he'll ever see this, and though I'm not a Bears fan, I am a human being who loves his mother and wishes the Urlacher family nothing but the best, whatever that may mean during this difficult and sad time.

Brian is a tough, excellent player that I respect immensely and who has always been a stand-up leader on and off the field for the team. He was obviously raised well; and I hope the women who made it so, Mrs. Urlacher, rests in peace.
